As the academic year winds down and U students begin making plans to go their separate ways, many will begin the process of discarding all vestiges and reminders of school, including abandoning their used and no-longer needed backpacks. The worn book carriers may well elicit from them unpleasant memories of heavy, expensive and rarely used texts and give cause to casually toss them into the trash and never give them another thought.

Softball Takes on BYU, Hopes to Catch Aztecs

Coming off its giving mood, having given away a 4-0 lead against Southern Utah to lose to the Thunderbirds 5-4, the U softball team returns to Mountain West Conference action tomorrow against BYU in Provo, Utah, in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. According to U coach Mona Stevens, the Utes "totally looked past SUU," and the team is known for playing very well coming off a loss.

Football Finishes With Intra-Squad Game

The U football team's spring practice session comes to a close on Saturday, and the Utes plan to end it in style. For the first time in coach Ron McBride's Utah tenure, the team will conclude the spring with a full-blown intra-squad game. The "Red-White Game" takes place Saturday afternoon at East High School, with action getting underway at 1 p.

Female Staff Seminar Concludes for the Year

Since the beginning of Fall Semester, female staff members have been meeting twice a month to unite diverse areas of campus and to better inform each other about the workings of a university as part of the staff leadership development seminar. Organized by the U human resources office and health sciences and sponsored by the Presidential Commission on the Status of Women, the seminar began with lessons on the history of higher education.

International Student, Lavern May, Dies Of Heart Failure

Anthropology student Lavern Decarla May, 37, died of heart failure on Monday. An international student from Jamaica, May graduated from Ricks College and would have graduated at the end of this semester. She is survived by numerous brothers and sisters living in Jamaica, the Bahamas and New Jersey.

U Will Improve When Classes Become More Difficult

When I recently asked a freshman friend about her first year as a U student, she said, "I've been surprised. It's pretty easy." Recalling my time at the U and remembering how unbelievably busy I have always felt, her answer surprised me. So I sat down and pulled out a transcript to see what I thought of my five years at Utah's flagship institution of higher learning.

Leavitt Urged to Declare Drought

SALT LAKE CITY?Gov. Mike Leavitt said he will follow the recommendation of the state drought committee and declare an official drought for most of Utah, making farmers and ranchers eligible for federal low- or no-interest loans. The drought committee said Tuesday that most southern, central and eastern Utah counties were eligible for drought status, with scattered parts of western and northern Utah not far behind.
