Skinhead Violence Threatens Moscow

MOSCOW?Outdoor markets and kiosks across Russia's capital run by ethnic minorities were closed, and thousands of police ringed a Moscow soccer stadium Sunday to thwart possible racially motivated violence. Police nationwide have been on alert all weekend amid fears of skinhead attacks around Hitler's birthday Saturday, and amid heightened activity by Russia's small ultranationalist minority.

Letter to the Editor: Eye Witness to the TA Situation

Editor: As a student of Karen Johnson's African American Experience class, I would like to respond to the article published in the April 10 Daily Utah Chronicle. It is unfortunate that the author, Matt Canham, was unable to report responses of other students in the class, particularly those who were not offended by Amadou Niang's comments on March 27.

Apparently student groups can do a lot with a little. Last fall, the Associated Students of the University of Utah allocated $500 for Terra Firma's Earth Day celebration?much less than the student environmental group had hoped. Terra Firma is one of the most highly funded clubs on campus.

K-UTE Loses Funding

The Student Senate voted last night to cut the U's student radio station funding by $16,000, beginning in the fall. Joint Bill #18 suggested eliminating the guaranteed 2 percent of the student activity fee that K-UTE AM 1620 from Redbook, the policy manual of the Associated Students of the University of Utah.

U.S. Friendly Fire Kills Four Canadians

WASHINGTON?The pilot of an American F-16 bombed Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan believing they were enemy forces firing on him, defense officials said Thursday. Four Canadians were killed and eight wounded. The soldiers were the first Canadians killed in a combat zone since serving alongside Americans in the Vietnam War.

Plane Crash Seems to be an Accident

MILAN, Italy?A small plane with only the pilot on board slammed into the 25th floor of a landmark skyscraper Thursday, killing at least four people and injuring 60. The interior minister said the crash appeared to be an accident. In Washington, a senior Bush administration official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Italian officials had told the United States that a mechanical problem not related to terrorism caused the crash.

Bankrupt Polaroid Sold to Bank One

BOSTON?Polaroid Corp., the bankrupt instant camera and film maker, said Thursday it has agreed to sell most of its assets to Bank One Corp. for $265 million. Polaroid reached a sales agreement with One Equity Partners, the private equity arm of the nation's sixth biggest financial institution.
