The Chronicle’s View: Get Involved in Political Process

March 25, 2002
Skyrocketing tuition, higher education budget cuts and legislators threatening to cut the president's pay because he wants to continue to ban guns on campus?the state Legislature doesn't hold the U in high regard. So why don't we just change the membership of the Legislature? The caucus meetings held last night kicked off a political season that will involve the election of many of the representatives and senators who will govern not only the U, but the state as a whole.

This Final Four is Amoung Most Uninteresting

March 25, 2002
As the Final Four rears its ugly head towards me, I can't help but stare at its ugly and grotesque face. Why? Because I am a college basketball fan. And I'm just barely hanging on to dear life? Even though I complain that the Tournament is losing its magic, which it is, I still will watch just about every round 'til the day I die.

March 25, 2002
"[Sunday's] game was the epitome of how this team has to play in order to become a factor in this conference," U baseball coach Tim Esmay said. Time Reveals that New Yorkers Are Survivors

By , , and March 24, 2002
Last weekend, I visited New York City, roughly six months after the life-altering events that we will forever refer to simply as Sept. 11. To the naked eye, much of New York remains unchanged. The city still rises out of the ocean, its towers of concrete and steel forming a canopy over the urban jungle below.

SALT LAKE CITY?Due to a $41 million dollar splice in the state's public education budget, class sizes will increase, teachers will be cut and some school districts may levy higher taxes. Granite School District, Utah's largest, is looking at cuts in 47 areas and plans to bring class sizes to about 28 students per teacher.

ASUU Candidate to Sue All Other Parties

While candidates hurriedly prepare for the upcoming ASUU election, it seems another obstacle lies before several of the parties in this year's race: legal battles. Presidential hopeful Steven L. Rinehart of the Probable Cause party, with a claim to fame for suing the U's Parking Services, has now threatened to sue all competition for allegedly "stealing and marketing" his parking platform for the campaign.

Allred Quits Basketball Team

By , , , , , and March 24, 2002
Perhaps perturbed by constant criticism by coach Rick Majerus that the Utah men's basketball team didn't have an inside presence, 6 foot-10 center Lance Allred has asked for and received a release from the U. Allred, a sophomore center from Salt Lake City's nearby East High School, announced in a press release Saturday, "I feel it is best for me at this point in my life and my basketball career to move on and find a place where I feel that I'm able to expand my game and my talents.

Gymnasts Avoid Mistakes, Set New Record Vs. Cougs

By , , and March 24, 2002
U gymnastics coach Greg Marsden loves to compete against BYU because, he said last Thursday, "it usually comes down to the final rotation." On Saturday night at the Huntsman Center, though, it was one and done. Not that the Cougars' abysmal bars performance to start things off mattered in the end, though.
