December 5, 2001
Perhaps I should drag myself to Smith's, shell out $30 bucks and purchase a Christmas tree, because I have an early holiday gift wish. My holiday hopes spawn from an announcement made by BYU athletic director Val Hale December 4. With the backing of Mountain West Conference university presidents, Hale said BYU might file an antitrust lawsuit against the Bowl Championship Series for the snubbing into a big-money bowl game.

Women’s Hoops Wary of Early Road Trouble

December 5, 2001
In a Dec. 5 article titled, "Database Helps With Cancer, Aging Research," The Chronicle misquoted Jean Wylie. Her final quote should have read, "When researchers ask Utahns to participate in a study, they don't have to explain why families are important." The Chronicle regrets the error.

SALT LAKE CITY?Forty IOC coats and jackets and other Olympic apparel were stolen from a truck in West Valley City, raising concerns about a possible security breach at the 2002 Winter Games. The coats were designed exclusively for International Olympic Committee delegates.

Police Get Absent Deportees’ Names

December 5, 2001
WASHINGTON?The names of more than 300,000 foreigners who disappeared after being ordered deported will be entered in a crime database so police can help track them down, the Immigration and Naturalization Service said Wednesday. By entering their names in the National Crime Information Center database, the missing deportees might be identified by officers in traffic stops or other identity checks, INS Commissioner James Ziglar told the House Government Reform subcommittee on criminal justice.
