USU Outlasts BYU in Five Games

In the first of two NCAA Volleyball Tournament regional matches Thursday night, Utah State played the spoiler in knocking off No. 19 BYU at Crimson Court. The Aggies beat the Cougars for the second time this year, winning a five-set thriller 30 26, 29-31, 30-23, 27-30, 16 14.

U May Close for Paralympic Ceremony

After the Olympics end and classes resume in March, Olympic involvement for the U will be far from over. Salt Lake City is still responsible to host the Paralympic Games, a series of competitive events among disabled athletes from around the world. Heritage Commons will still house athletes, and Rice-Eccles Stadium will host the Opening and Closing ceremonies.

Study Looks for Cure to Common Mental Defect

The same compounds some plants like periwinkle use to fight off fungus may one day treat a form of mental retardation. The most common inheritable form of mental retardation is Fragile X. Children with the disorder can be diagnosed as early as 2-years-old, with IQs about 35 to 65 points below normal.

World AIDS Day Held on Campus

The AIDS Memorial Quilt displays more than 83,000 names of people who have died from the disease. Union Programs displayed several sections of the quilt in the Union Ballroom Thursday in honor of World AIDS Day. World AIDS Day is Dec. 1, which is a Saturday this year, so Union Programs decided to recognize it beforehand.

On Feb. 8, 2002, the University of Utah will play host to more than 50,000 spectators and athletes. Officials will block roads surrounding the Rice-Eccles Stadium, shut down the nearby TRAX line and drastically restrict access to the area surrounding the stadium.
