During college, Alf Johnson wasn't too worried about finding gainful employment after graduation. After getting a degree in the hot field of computer science, the U grad formed a rock band and gave his real passion a chance before joining the other graduates in the hum drum job hunting scene.

As graduates prepare to step out of college and onto their career paths, job markets are fluctuating with the economic downturn. While the slow economy has affected many job markets, some areas still remain strong. At the Graduate School of Social Work, students currently have about an 85 percent hire rate within three months of graduation, according to Dean Jannah Mather.

Job Offers Down, Recruiters More Scarce in Certain Fields

Springtime will release a flood of U graduates into the job market, ready to put their education into practice. However, many graduating seniors are doubtful of their employment prospects because of the wake of the economic slowdown after Sept. 11. These fears are not unfounded as the National Association of Colleges and Employers reports that overall college hiring is down 37 percent and graduates are competing for fewer and lower-paying jobs.

Baseball in Prime Spot for MWC Title

Winning the Mountain West Conference was the goal from Day One for the U baseball team, and now it has set itself up in a position to win the conference, as it is 3.5 games back of conference leader San Diego State. Utah solidified its third-place position last weekend, as it swept Air Force, and will have a chance to be just 1.

Snow Cancels Another Game for U Softball

For the second time this year, bad weather has kept the U softball team from playing Utah State. Yesterday's game with the Aggies was canceled due to too much snow in Logan, Utah. The poor weather may also cancel Utah's game with Cal State Northridge, scheduled for Thursday.

Club Volleyball Goes to Nationals

The basketball players of New York City's famed Rucker Tournament might not be able to make an NBA roster, but they could clean house, more often than not, in some corporate recreational league. Of course, the incumbent rec players would be none too happy about seeing their playground unfairly usurped by people talented enough they really ought to be playing at a higher level.

UUPD Offers Rape Awareness Program

Susan Foss feels confident in the event of a sexual attack. Now concluding a self-defense course, Foss is sure attackers wouldn't want to deal with the "fighting, screaming target" she can become. Foss is one of 10 U women enrolled in the Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) System on campus.
