Letter to the Editor: University’s Quality Diminishes

By , , and April 3, 2002
Editor: My name is Brian Emerson, and I am in the process of completing my second to last semester here at the U and will graduate this summer in environmental studies. I am writing to express my utter shock and discontentment regarding the possibility of Fred Montague's termination as professor and academic adviser in the biology department.

Letter to the Editor: Lay-Off Is Legislature’s Fault

Editor: It seems as if this year, more than ever, the Utah government has extremely misplaced priorities when it comes to funding. Each year it seems like less and less attention (and funding) is paid to the ones who need it the most and who will be commanding the future ?the students.

The Chronicle’s View: Poor Decision Making In Montague Situation

April 3, 2002
The biology department's attempt to fire Fred Montague proved as ill-fated as it was ill-thought out. The decision hurt one man, his family and threatened hundreds of students. If other departments on campus can tighten their belts by 4.7 percent by cutting paper, paper clips and personnel not directly affecting instruction, why couldn't the biology department? How could the department view a man who advises about 700 undergraduates and generated more than $69,000 in enrollment funds last semester as dispensable? And as an adviser, teacher and active member of the U community, Montague could hardly qualify as "non-essential" staff.

Impact Party Platform

April 3, 2002
The Impact Party has made a huge impact on these elections and will continue to make an immediate impact when placed in office. Ours is a campaign of integrity. It is a campaign that is doing the best it can?day in and day out. Our primary concern is that we are as prepared as we can be, as knowledgeable as we can be, and as sincere and personable as we can be.
