GARDEZ, Afghanistan?U.S. allied Afghan fighters massed near the mountains of eastern Afghanistan on Monday before a sweeping push to clear out al Qaeda fighters hiding out in the region's warren of caves. The United States resumed steady bombing runs over the area after nightfall Monday.

Zimbabwe Elections Results in Dispute

HARARE, Zimbabwe?Police fired tear gas to disperse voters Monday at the close of a chaotic, court-ordered third day of polling in the most competitive presidential election in Zimbabwe's history. Police also fired guns into the air at a polling station in the neighborhood of Glen Norah to disperse 600 people waiting to vote Monday night.

Ridge Coordinates Local Terror Alerts

WASHINGTON?Homeland Security chief Tom Ridge said Monday a multistage alert system will provide "a common vocabulary" of danger to help communities all over the nation respond to threats. Ridge, speaking to the National League of Cities, sought to bring local officials on board with the proposal, designed to provide more specific guidance when the government determines there is a new threat of terrorism.

Drug Store Card to Aid Elderly Clients

WASHINGTON?A new program created by U.S. drug store chains soon may provide low-income seniors without drug insurance an opportunity to purchase discounted prescription medications. The Pharmacy Care One Card by the National Association of Chain Drug Stores will give seniors with the card access to multiple discount programs offered by various manufacturers that agree to participate.

Trustees Approve Tuition Proposal

The U Board of Trustees got its first look at the proposed tuition increase Monday, as two administrators led the governing board through a discussion of the 9.3 percent hike. The board, comprised of community leaders with ties to campus, approved of the tuition and fee hike, which will generate an additional $5 million in a year when the U lost nearly $20 million in budget cuts and unrenewed one-time funding.

Prominent Media Lawyer to Visit Law School this Week

A former U student and one of the best female lawyers in the United States is returning to her alma mater this week. California litigator Kelli Sager, College of Law class of 1985, will serve as the 2001 2002 distinguished alumna-in residence March 14 and 15.

Gymnasts Come Home, Get Win

For five straight meets, the U gymnastics team had been on the road. And in each of those five away contests, the fifth-ranked Utes had to count at least one fall. Both streaks came to an end Saturday night. Not surprisingly, that spelled trouble for No. 14 Oregon State, as Utah extended its regular season home winning streak to 168 meets with a 197.

New Bill Requires Geologist License

SALT LAKE CITY?A bill that would require geologists to be licensed passed the 2002 legislative General Session. Sponsored by Rep. Ralph Becker, the measure requires professional geologists to have a college degree and work experience in the field. The bill provides for a five member professional licensing board made up of the state geologist, three professional geologists and a member of the public.

Women Split Pair of Weekend Matchups

After losing three straight matches to Washington, Kansas and Washington State, the U women's tennis team finally broke out of its slump, as it defeated the Idaho State Bengals, 5-2. However the Utes still had a match against the No. 62 ranked SMU Mustangs.
