Deer Prompt New Killing Club at U

By By Demelze Carne, Comical News Writer January 13, 2002
Intense weather, parking nightmares and a month-long Olympic break have made Spring Semester "interesting"?but for some students the deer running rampant on campus take the cake. Dozens of deer, and even some moose, have made the U home sweet home. While some students enjoy seeing the cloven beasts, others take a different view.

Tico’s VeggieBurger Barn Now a Non-Proud Olympic Sponsor

Coca-Cola, Visa and Chevrolet are just a few of the many corporations throughout the world that have ponied up the necessary dinero to become proud sponsors of the Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Winter Games. None of them, however, can quite match the notoriety now associated with Tico's VeggieBurger Barn, which, on Thursday, became the first ever non-proud sponsor in the history of the Games.

Discriminatory Tuition Policy Incites Massive Protests at U

January 13, 2002
Activists have descended on the University of Utah in droves after a blatantly discriminatory tuition policy was reported in The Daily Utah Chronicle earlier this week. Protesters from as far away as Alaska and Hawaii have been burning President Bernie Machen in effigy and demanding a removal of the policies or his immediate resignation.

A Chance For the Tables to Turn in Utah Politics

January 13, 2002
The last time someone other than Jim Hansen won an election in Utah's 1st Congressional District, the Jazz still played in New Orleans. The Grumpy Old Man's retirement throws open the door for a hungry pack of potential GOP successors. Yet Hansen leaves sizeable shoes to fill.

Letter to the Editor: Determined to Seek Parking Justice

Editor: It just goes to show that if you have enough money, laws don't apply to you. So what if we all "know" by now that donors get these types of perks (though it is a bit harder to understand why the girlfriend of a son of these donors also receives these understood perks), does that make it right? What exactly do I benefit from as a student from these perks? Please spell it out for me, because I am mistakenly under the presumption instilled in me by my hard working parents that we are all equal and no one is above the law, no matter who they are.

The Chronicle’s View: Campus Gun Issue Missing Student Voice

January 13, 2002
The battle over firearms on campus will hit a high point today as U President Bernie Machen will argue in favor of his no-gun policy in front of the decidedly pro-gun Legislature. Who prevails may take years to sort out, as both lawmakers and Machen have mentioned the possibility of a court proceeding.

Nuclear Waste Site Stirs Controversy

January 10, 2002
SALT LAKE CITY?The sooner federal officials approve Yucca Mountain in Nevada as a permanent storage spot for nuclear waste, the sooner waste could leave Utah, say supporters of a plan to store high-level nuclear waste in Utah's Skull Valley. Not so fast, say opponents of the Skull Valley plan, who see Utah becoming a de-facto permanent storage dump and say the Nevada site is not a sure thing.

National Chief OKs Olympic Security

January 10, 2002
SALT LAKE CITY?Even before Tom Ridge stepped onto a helicopter Thursday for a tour of Olympic sites, he was convinced everything possible had been done to make next month's Winter Olympics safe. Nothing the nation's domestic security chief saw on his morning fly over ski slopes and ice arenas changed his mind.
