Mayor Navigates Local Airline Security Turbulence

January 7, 2002
Call me a traitor. Call me a bum. Call me a bleeding heart, pot-smoking, never done-an-honest-day's work-in-his-life, long haired, no good liberal. I like Rocky Anderson. When the Salt Lake City mayor first won election in 1999, my moderate democrat's heart sank.

The Chronicle’s View: Playing Parking Favorites Creates Campus Inequality

By , , and January 7, 2002
Elisabeth Wilkinson lost her job as an appeals officer for the University of Utah Parking Services in early December. Such an event would not normally warrant newsworthiness except that Wilkinson said she was fired unfairly for talking to the news media about a "corrupt" incident that happened at Parking Services.

Letter to the Editor: Utah Heritage Boasts Expensive Roots

Editor: I was amused and yet disturbed by the Jan. 4 letter to the editor in The Daily Utah Chronicle, "Mormon Influences Rooted in Heritage," written by Bart Gatrell. Gatrell begins his campaign with a cry for understanding, stating that we are inaccurate when we make claims that there is not an overabundance of Mormon influence here at the University of Utah.

Catching the Spotlight: U Marketers Hope to Cash in on the Games

January 6, 2002
U public relations officers are gearing up for the greatest competition of their lives. The Olympics are coming to town in one month's time, giving the PR gurus a chance to grab the world's ear with the hope that a little media coverage will greatly impact campus.

Olympics Give Protesters Chance at Limelight

January 6, 2002
The Student Green Party thought it found the perfect place to make a statement about the Olympics. The strip of grass near Carlson Hall laid out the perfect course for a mock Olympic torch run. According to the Greens' plans, a six-pack of Coke, a Happymeal, running shoes and other products would weigh down an activist-torchbearer.

Olympic Hopeful: Pat Casey

January 6, 2002
Years before February 2002 and the Olympic Winter Games, the prospect of the Games was drawing potential skiers to the U. Former Ute skier and current exercise and sport science/ environmental studies major Pat Casey was one such athlete. "Having the Olympics factored into my decision to come to the U," he said.

Olympic Hopeful: Kristina Joder

January 6, 2002
Sometimes the hardest thing for an Olympic hopeful to do is to come to terms with reality. Former U All-American cross country skier Kristina Joder was ready to do so. The 23-year-old stuck around Utah to train for the U.S. Olympic trials instead of flying home to her native Landgrove, Vt.

Olympic Hopefuls: Torin Koos

January 6, 2002
If getting a spot on the 2002 U.S. Cross Country Ski Team was based solely on achievement, Torin Koos would be a lock for the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics. In a sport where athletes usually don't peak until they are into their 30s, the 21 year-old's resum reads like one of Olympic caliber.

Games Force U Teams to Alter Practices, Schedules

By , , and January 6, 2002
Myriad Utah residents vowed in the few years preceding 2002 that once the Winter Olympics arrived in Salt Lake City, they would be taking off. Meanwhile, many others, like the U students who'd acclimated themselves to living in the new dorms, found displacement foisted upon them, as they were forced to vacate their residences to make way for incoming athletes from around the world.
