For those who commute to the U, the Monday after Thanksgiving loomed ominously in the horizon, threatening anyone who dared consider parking in the post-SLOC takes-the-stadium world. But, actually, parking hasn't been that bad in that world. Historically, Rice-Eccles Stadium provided U students and employees with about 1,250 spaces?and it will again.

Senate Offices Will Reopen Early 2002

WASHINGTON?Officials cleaning up a Senate office building contaminated with anthrax now hope the work will be finished in time to reopen early next year. Employees returned to work Monday at the adjacent Dirksen Senate Office Building, closed while cleanup crews fumigated Senate Majority Leader Thomas Daschle's office suite in the Hart Senate Office Building with chlorine dioxide gas over the weekend.

Ethical to Pay for Donated Organs

HERNDON, Va.?It's ethical to pay families who donate a loved one's organs, as long as the money isn't enough to constitute a bribe, a newly created organ transplant advisory committee was told Monday. The committee, meeting for the first time, is charged with advising the secretary of health and human services on ways to increase organ donation and how best to distribute organs that are donated.

Drunk Man Shoots At Cops from Coop

HARRISVILLE?An inebriated man angry about the loss of his house and business shot at police from inside a chicken coop, authorities said. No one was injured in Sunday's three and a half hour standoff between police and 51-year-old Albert Zampedri. The man fired twice at police from inside the coop and police returned fire, said Harrisville Police Chief Maxwell Jackson.

Shurtleff Says U Policy Prohibiting Weapons is Illegal

The U's long-standing policy prohibiting guns on campus may crumble under the weight of a new legal opinion released Friday by Attorney General Mark Shurtleff. Asked by legislative leaders to review governmental policies on guns, Shurtleff responded with a formal opinion outlining illegal bans at the U, foster homes, day cares and certain state agencies.

U President Bernie Machen explained the role of research institutions at the state Board of Regents meeting Friday. Machen's comments came only minutes before state budget representatives reported the state's economic situation. Their statement: State monies are low.
