Pappas: A tainted womb

By By Nicholas Pappas April 11, 2008
I was a handful when I was young. I hated losing at anything. I threw fits at every checkmate, intercepted ball or sunken battleship. My mother never let me win, either. She wanted me to know that in life nothing is easy and nothing is free. It was just one of the many lessons I learned from my mother.

Opera DVDs are awesome

By By Christie Franke April 11, 2008
Never underestimate the power of music -- even classical music -- to make you want to get up and dance. Leave that to iTunes. But to watch a live performance while flopped on the couch with a bowl of popcorn, that's the business of the DVD industry. I know, you're probably asking, "What do I watch?" or, perhaps, more importantly, "Why watch at all?" The easy answer is, classical music is best enjoyed live (DVDs are fairly comparable, though), and you've just got to love opera for the great big over-blown, melodramatic, extravagant art form it is.

Red Herring: Getting hot with that low APR

By By Jarad Sampson April 11, 2008
Don't pretend like it doesn't feel good. Yeah, you know you like it when I slide that card through the checkout line. Mmm, I bet you feel like doing it again and again, till that magnetic strip runs bare, even at the ridiculously low 5.99 percent APR. I know you act like you're better than a low APR and more conservative (or so you'd like to think).

The Word (4/10): Chronicle’s guide to the SLC music scene

By By Makena Walsh April 11, 2008
April 12 Why? Urban Lounge (241 S. 500 East) 9 p.m. $10 Why? is composed of three visionary men who compensate for their lack of "virtuosic masturbatory shredding ability on the guitar" with the best indie-hop/psych-rock/folk-pop to ever grace the ears of this tickled Redux writer.

RSL: Unity needed to beat D.C. United

By By Tim Haslam April 11, 2008
Real Salt Lake (0-1-1) continue their 2008 campaign on Saturday when they take on D.C. United (1-1-0) at Rice-Eccles Stadium. RSL have fared well against D.C. United when playing at home, winning the last two home matches, 2-1. The first RSL win of the 2007 season came against D.

Gymnastics: Red Rocks set for regionals

By By Jon Gilbert April 11, 2008
When a team has qualified for every single NCAA Championship, its confidence is usually pretty strong going into a regional qualifying meet. After 26 consecutive national championship appearances, the U gymnastics team is sure it will get through the North Central Regional Championship on Saturday in Minneapolis, Minn.

Residence Halls switch to wireless

April 11, 2008
The U's Residence Halls are installing wireless Internet and removing phone lines in student rooms. Students will not have to pay any additional fees for wireless installation or activating the service. "We asked residents in a survey how many use their room phone or what they use instead," said Barb Remsburg, associate director for Housing and Residential Education.

Ute Briefs (4/11)

April 11, 2008
Volleyball The U women's volleyball team added another piece to what head coach Beth Launiere hopes will be a rebuilt contender for a Mountain West Conference championship. On Wednesday, Launiere announced that Cinthia Silva, a juco All-American at Salt Lake Community College, will be joining her team for the 2008 season.

Kamrani: Outlook for next year is Boylen hot

By By Chris Kamrani April 11, 2008
"We're planting the seeds right now," said Johnnie Bryant, recently-departed senior captain of the U men's basketball team. "But I won't be there when it grows." It's a damn shame, too. With the conclusion of the Runnin' Utes' first year under the reign of steamin' genius Jim Boylen comes hope and a potential false sense of propriety.

Softball: Rollercoaster season continues

By By Jason Peterson April 11, 2008
Same story, different venue. The Utah softball team (20-19) relived last week's rollercoaster of emotions again by losing 3-2 in the final inning to No. 18 San Diego State (30-11), then rebounding for a 1-0 win in the second game of Thursday's double-header in San Diego, Calif.
