Undocumented students bill fails to make it to Senate floor

House Bill 241, which would have allowed undocumented college students to pay in-state tuition if they agreed not to work, died last night in the Senate. Rep. Glenn Donnelson, R-North Ogden, substituted this bill for the original bill, which repealed in-state tuition for undocumented students.

Plans for business school rejected

Legislators removed an amendment last night to a capital facilities bill that would have authorized the U to use private funds to renovate the David Eccles School of Business. Now the U must go with a plan the state approved three years ago to redo the business school.

Textbooks now tax-free

After a wave of student support and a reinterpretation of state tax codes, U college textbooks will be tax-free starting April 1, 2008. ASUU Government Relations Director Marko Mijic said the tax change is the result of students statewide taking ownership of the initiative.

Employee pay raise passes

House Bill 4, which determines state agency and higher education compensation increases for the upcoming fiscal year, passed in the Senate yesterday and must now be signed by Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. to go into affect. The bill, sponsored by Rep. Ron Bigelow, R-West Valley, provides for a 3 percent compensation increase for all university employees and 2 percent cost of living increase contingent on changes in health plans.

Elaine Elliott has been in the coaching business for more than two-and-a-half decades, but never, in all her seasons on the Utah bench, has she mentored a point guard quite like Leilani Mitchell. No offense to Shona Thorburn -- the No. 7 pick in the 2006 WNBA draft, or to any of the other great point guards who have brought the ball up the court for the Utes over the years, but Mitchell is, according to Elliott, the best ever.

Armstrong visit prompts surprise Huntsman announcement

Two prominent cancer survivors, cyclist Lance Armstrong and Huntsman Cancer Institute founder Jon M. Huntsman, met with cancer patients at the Huntsman Cancer Institute and discussed plans for a major expansion of the facility Wednesday afternoon. After the two met with patients, Huntsman made a surprise announcement that financing has been completed to double the size of the Huntsman Cancer Institute, which should be completed by 2011.

ASUU candidates face uphill diversity battle

For the first time in an Associated Students of the University of Utah election, candidates attended an ASUU Diversity Board meeting to answer any questions that members of minority groups had for them. However, a number of students walked away feeling as though their questions weren't fully answered.

Baseball: Utes look to pull off first win against SUU

The U baseball team has found just about every way to lose a game so far this season. The team has lost by eight runs twice, and by one run three times. The Utes have seen seven-run leads vanish and they've also staged rallies to stay in the game late. Despite all their hardships, good news is on the horizon for head coach Bill Kinneberg and the Utes (0-7).
