New bill would cut tuition discount for illegals

The Utah Senate introduced a 20-page immigration reform bill Jan. 31, combining proposals from several pieces of legislation already moving through the House and Senate. Senate Bill 81, sponsored by Sen. Bill Hickman, R-Washington County, would repeal in-state tuition for undocumented college students who register after April 30, 2010.

Middle East Film Series kicks off

The U kicked off its fifth annual Middle East Film Series on Wednesday night with a movie about love. "Live and Become," the first movie screened in the series, is an award-winning film about the struggles of Ethiopian Jews in Israel during the 1980s. "It's really a story about love," Laurence Loeb, a professor of anthropology, told a crowd of about 60 people before the screening at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts Auditorium.

Homelessness continues to increase, panel says

The amount of homeless people in Salt Lake City is increasing, according to a panel of experts who spoke at the Hinckley Institute of Politics on Friday. "We had just shy of 1,000 people who turned to us for shelter last night," said Matt Minkovich, executive director for the Road Home, the largest homeless shelter in Utah.

Cold sores have genetic link, study says

Millions of Americans suffer from recurring cold sores as a result of herpes simplex virus, but U researchers may have discovered the hereditary link to herpes, which could lead to more effective treatment of cold sore outbreaks. "We want to know why people are getting cold sores and why some don't, which gene or genes triggers the dirty deed and figure out how we can inhibit it," said John Kriesel, a professor in the School of Medicine's Division of Infectious Diseases.

I've seen better. Don't get me wrong, this year's NBA All-Star teams are loaded up the wazoo, and for good reason. With just 24 available spots and 30-something players in the league performing at an All-Star level, a handful of players are bound to get the shaft every year.

Utah hockey drops opener For the sixth time this season, the U's hockey club faced UVSC on Friday. The result was a 15-6 shootout victory for the Wolverines (21-8), who have yet to lose to the Utes. "There's a reason (UVSC is) second in the West," said U forward Greg Swenson, who assisted with half the team's goals and scored one of his own.

Gymnastics: Red Rocks post 10th highest score in team history
