Panel debates discrimination against LGBT workers

By By Clayton Norlen November 19, 2007
Although conservatives in the Utah State Legislature argue that current laws already protect against discrimination in the workplace, liberals claim that the law should specifically outlaw discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. The U Debate Team and the department of communication hosted a parliamentary debate and panel discussion to debate whether Utah should create laws prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation.

By By Carlos Mayorga November 19, 2007
After being dormant for years, the U chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers is emerging once again as a group of engineering students are working to bring it back. SHPE is a national organization founded in the 1970s by a group of engineers in California who wanted to become role models within the Hispanic community.

Delta Gamma raises money with Anchor Splash

By By Michael McFall November 19, 2007
With money still pouring in, the Delta Gamma sorority has collected more than $2,000 during the past week to benefit Service for Sight, a center for the blind, in its annual Anchor Splash fundraiser. The money will help provide the center with braille books, eye screenings and funding for service dogs.

BYU: Killing for conservation

By By Lauren Mueller November 19, 2007
Admittedly, I'm not a vegetarian. I love animals and I'm currently housing scores of them, but I'm also a sucker for anything bacon-wrapped. Sure, it's a little hypocritical, but I'm hungry -- not bloodthirsty. I don't revel at the top of the food chain, draped in endangered pelts.

America needs a revolution

By By Janice Kopaunik November 19, 2007
Originally intended by its creators to be small and obedient to its people, the U.S. government has grown and developed a mind of its own, acting with minimal concern to the needs and desires of its citizens. Like an uncontrolled child, this once well-behaved government has turned into the porky school bully, bossing around the other children on the playground and doing as it pleases, knowing there are no consequences to its actions.

Finding homes for research animals

By By Jonathan Ng November 19, 2007
Research animals such as dogs and cats are often a key part of scientific advancements and are used in studies at the U. However, when studies are finished, the animals must be taken care of and often need to find homes. U researchers who are members of the Retired Research Animal Adoption Program recently held their annual Paws 'N' Claws Holiday Bazaar to raise money for the maintenance of the dogs and cats involved in non-invasive studies, as well as to help find homes for them.

Call to U: Make your voice heard

November 19, 2007
Often, I come across many people who want to tell me their feelings about The Daily Utah Chronicle and, more specifically, its opinion section's content. The reviews are often mixed and usually regard what people feel is inadequate coverage or diversity of opinion on a specific topic.

Fans psyched for Utah-BYU game

By By Natalie Dicou November 19, 2007
Everyone has heard the saying, "One man's trash is another man's treasure." Well, when it comes to Utah and BYU -- foes who make up one of the fiercest rivalries in sports -- one man's "Oh crap!" is another man's "Woohoo!" In the backs of their minds, fans on both sides know that when Utah succeeds, BYU benefits, and when BYU succeeds, Utah benefits.

Muff helps Utah prevail

By By Jon Gilbert November 19, 2007
The scene was eerily familiar. Utah held a skimpy second-half lead over its Mountain West Conference nemesis New Mexico in Rice-Eccles Stadium on Saturday night, and suddenly the Lobos made a push. Memories of 2005 and 2006, along with the accompanying theme song from "The Twilight Zone," came rushing back for the Utah faithful after New Mexico started the second half off with 10 unanswered points to whittle Utah's 14 point lead down to four.

Deja Who?

By By Cody Brunner November 18, 2007
Utah leading New Mexico at halftime isn't a big surprise. Sustaining that lead and playing an entire 60 minutes against the Lobos, however, is a bolt from the blue. The Utes did exactly that as they staved off déj vu and won 28-10 at Rice-Eccles Stadium on Saturday night to extend their winning streak to seven.
