Exposed and on stage

October 4, 2007
No curtains. No backstage. No suspension of disbelief. This is playwright Bertolt Brecht's recipe for theater, and the U department of theater has got it right with "Happy End." A "melodrama with songs," this comedic early 1920s musical about a Salvation Army worker who falls in love with a lead Chicago gangster she is trying to reform was written by Brecht in 1929 and features music from Kurt Weill and Elisabeth Hauptmann, also known by her pseudonym, Dorothy Lang.

“The Jane Austen Book Club” a repetitive, formulaic bore

By By Danny Letz October 4, 2007
There are few names that carry as much gender-specific baggage as Jane Austen's. Despite anyone's take on Austen's actual body of work, the subject is inevitably tainted by one's perspective on men, women and the relationship between the two (with Austen's feminine-centric novels regarded as the embodiment of feminine sensibilities).

Red Herring: 50 ditches rap game, revives poetry genre

By By Orion Archibald October 4, 2007
Shortly before the Sept. 11 release of their respective albums, musician Curtis Jackson, known better by his stage name 50 Cent, issued a challenge to Kanye West. If Kayne's album outsold his, he claimed he would leave the music industry. True to his word, after his Curtis was outsold by West's Graduation to the tune of 250,000 copies in the first week, he got up in front of reporters early last week to announce his retirement from the music industry.

Football notes

By By Cody Brunner October 3, 2007
The Utes will play on national television for the first time this year on Friday night when they travel to Kentucky to take on Louisville. The game will be broadcast on ESPN. "Everybody wants to play on national (television) so it's exciting for us," Utah quarterback Brian Johnson said.

Awww, the Yanks again?!

October 3, 2007
Don't get me wrong -- I don't want it to be like this. Honestly, I don't. Stop looking at me like that -- I feel appropriate guilt already. I'm starting to feel sick. My ulcer is acting up. But there's no way around it: The Yankees have been the best team in baseball, bar none, for the last three months, and there's no reason to think that it won't continue.

U volleyball picking up the pace

October 3, 2007
The volleyball teams of Utah and New Mexico State share one unflattering thing in common: a joint futility against teams in the Top 25. For the Aggies, their 0-3 record against top-25 competition doesn't mean the same as the Utes' 1-4 record, given that those three losses are the only blemishes on New Mexico State's record so far.

Letter: LGBTQ stories are disappointing

October 3, 2007
Editor: I was extremely disappointed when I read two articles about LBGTQ week in The Chronicle for Oct. 2, 2007 ("Pride posters kept in the closet," Carlos Mayorga, "TV ignores GLBTQ Population," Anastasia Niedrich). They highlighted for me the way in which the LBGTQ movement is undermining the civil rights movement for all underrepresented minorities.

Cubs are team of destiny

October 3, 2007
Hey Cubs fans, break out the Old Style and stogies -- this is "Anno Catuli," aka The Year of Our Cubs. The Anno Catuli sign -- which currently reads AC006299 and looms behind right field -- counts the years it's been since division, league and world championships.
