It was a good week for America. There haven't been many opportunities to say that lately, but when Attorney General Alberto Gonzales resigned early Monday, it became undeniably so. Gonzales has been a divisive and damaging presence during his time at the helm of the Justice Department.

As the replay rolled showing Appalachian State defensive back Corey Lynch block Michigan's last gasp field goal attempt, collect the loose ball, frantically race nearly the length of the field, get ridden down by a Michigan player as time expired and then get piled on by just about every Mountaineer in uniform, I wondered: How much more awesome could college football be? I'm sure Lynch was thinking just about the same thing as he smiled at the bottom of the human heap of 40 teammates crushing him: Does it get any better than this? The Mountaineers' epic 34-32 upset of Michigan -- the first victory for a Football Championship Subdivision team over a division 1A school ranked in the Associated Press top 25 -- proved that anything can happen in college football, making it far better than the NFL.

Tall order ahead for Utah football coaches

The best indication of a prepared and efficient coaching staff is often its ability to make adjustments in critical situations. The U coaching staff will have that opportunity this week. In other words, the injuries to star quarterback Brian Johnson and tailback Matt Asiata will force the coaches to earn their paychecks.

Book sale offers bargains

Students can buy books for a dollar or less at 666 Guardsman Way, where the Marriott Library is holding a year-round book sale. The book sale quietly moved to the Archives Building near the Steiner Aquatics Building due to ongoing construction at the library.

U receives $19.2 million for HIV research

The National Institute of Health awarded U researchers a $19.2 million grant last week to work on how the HIV virus is replicated and assembles to infect healthy cells. The NIH awarded similar grants to research centers at the University of Pittsburgh and University of California, San Francisco.
