Swimmers Begin Conference Schedule

Trying to get its program off the ground, the U swimming team will begin the brunt of its conference schedule, hosting New Mexico and Colorado State this weekend. With all the non conference meets out of the way, the Utes are looking to roll against conference foes.

You read it every week. A bike is cut from the rack. A parking pass disappears from an uncovered jeep. A backpack is lifted from a University Bookstore cubby, followed by a requisite jab about the price of textbooks. The vast majority of campus crime is property crime, and most is easily prevented.

Blood Drive Shows Return to Normalcy

The return to normalcy after Sept. 11 has been a welcome change for many?but not for blood banks. ARUP Blood Services misses the large number of blood donors after the terrorist attacks. "The week of Sept. 11 was the first week we were able to supply all of our own blood," said Sarah Evans, ARUP donor collection specialist.

Editor: When I first heard about the gun debate, I thought it would be a mute point. Responsible gun owners already know that the campus is no place for guns. Don't get me wrong, there are many places where guns are appropriate, and I completely support the right to bear arms.

The regular season is finally beginning for the U women's tennis team, and coach John Tsumas can finally see how much his team has improved, and if the Utes can contend for a conference title. The first matchup for the Utes will be against in-state rival Utah State Friday at the Eccles Tennis Center.

Favre Handed NFL Defensive MVP Award to Strahan

Wednesday, the NFL unveiled its Defensive Player of the Year, and it was no surprise that the NFL awarded the honor to Giants defensive end Michael Strahan for the amazing feat he accomplished this season. It took almost 17 years for the NFL sack record to be broken, and it was broken by one of the best defensive ends the pro game has ever seen, but of course, in the NFL, there's been less attention focused on the new record than on whether the play he broke the record on was scripted or not.

WASHINGTON?John Walker Lindh, the 20-year-old Californian who fought with the Taliban in Afghanistan, will be charged with conspiracy to kill U.S. citizens and could face life in prison if convicted, Attorney General John Ashcroft said Tuesday. Lindh, who converted to Islam at 16 and is alleged to have trained at an al Qaeda camp in Afghanistan, will be charged in a U.

RAMALLAH, West Bank?Palestinian police on Tuesday detained the leader of a faction that claimed responsibility for the assassination of an Israeli cabinet minister?a move that appeared to be aimed at defusing spiraling tensions. The move came just hours after gunmen shot and killed two Israelis in the West Bank: a 72-year-old Israeli-American man shopping for building supplies and a 45-year-old woman driving to a wedding.

Powell Hopes Talks Can Halt Violence

SHANNON, Ireland?Secretary of State Colin Powell said Tuesday he hopes his talks this week in Pakistan and India can build on a recent easing of tensions and lead to a "complete halt" to the nations' monthlong confrontation. Speaking to reporters before a refueling stop in Ireland, Powell said a conciliatory speech by Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf showed that "the rush toward conflict has slowed quite a bit.
