Letter to the Editor: Compromising the Safety of Students

Editor: Once again I see that the powers that be are showing that their degrees far exceed their intelligence. Our distinguished University of Utah President Bernie Machen is a prime example. He can be told that the U's policy towards firearms is in violation of the law.

Assistant Football Coach Goes to BYU

The Utah football team will be looking for a new assistant coach after Steve Kaufusi, a seven-year U staffer who oversaw the team's defensive ends, left the Utes to take a position at his alma mater, BYU. After earning All-Conference honors on the defensive line for the Cougars through 1987 and playing in the NFL for the next four years, Kaufusi joined the U staff as a graduate assistant in '94 after earning his bachelor's degree from the Y that year.

Lawmakers believe a 20 year-old U policy banning students and employees from carrying weapons on campus is illegal. After hearing opinions from many college and university representatives from across the state, the Administrative Rules Committee appealed all campus gun-control policies.

U Ready to Make History?

Regardless of whether or not the Olympic Games next month are successful for Salt Lake City, they will add to the relatively young history of the Winter Games. The Winter Olympics have been historically considered the "stepchild" of the Olympics, and therefore have been less glorified than the Summer Games, according to Professor Roland Renson, who spoke at the U Thursday.

Police Report: Skateboarder Charged With Trespassing

Skateboarder caught on campus?Police checked on a report of skateboarders on the north side of the Student Services Building. They were boarding in a way that damages U property. When the officer arrived, he saw only one man boarding, so he talked to him. The man said he didn't know of the U's policy on skateboarding.
