K-UTE Hosts Months of Static

By Demelze Carne, Comical News Writer

The U literary magazine Shades recently made a deal with K-UTE to host a weekly on-air poetry reading.

But, when the three students who tuned in to K-UTE to listen to this riveting program, all they heard was static.

For the past three months, the radio station has been broadcasting absolutely nothing.

The problem wasn?t mentioned on Friday, during the White Trash Rock Block, hosted by Eric Walden and Leah Bryner, when a single caller telephoned in and mentioned that she couldn?t hear a damn thing.

?I was writing my latest opinion column when I noticed that I hadn?t heard anything on my Walkman for about an hour,? said Laura Weiss, opinion editor of The Daily Utah Chronicle. ?I had to call in three times before they picked up, they must have had a lot of callers.?

?I kept hearing this odd noise that was coming from behind one of the soundboards,? Bryner said. ?It kind of sounded like a drowning duck.?

?It was weird, because we were just rocking out in the studio. I was damn near blown away by the phone ringing. It took five minutes just to find the damn thing. We?ve never gotten a caller before,? Walden said.

The phone, a rotary-dial olive green model reminiscent of the ?70s, was covered in dust and cobwebs.

K-UTE station manager Beth Fratkin now understands why there have been no phone calls for the past three months.

?We haven?t gotten any complaints in the past while,? she said.

As for the lack of callers requesting songs since the founding of the station, she had no comment.

When asked why she hadn?t heard the static during the three months, she abruptly stood up, muttered something about her mother calling her and quickly headed for the door.

As she opened the door, she muttered something under her breath which sounded like, ?like I listen to this stuff anyway.?

K-UTE was founded a few short years after the U was. Original broadcasters used tinfoil and metal tubes to broadcast.

?Yeah, that sounds about right,? Walden said. ?The broadcast is just about as f***ed up as it was then.?

When asked about what he thought about K-UTE, U senior James Mitton responded, ?K UTE? What the hell is K-UTE??
