Editor:
I am writing in response to Dan Thatcher’s Oct. 24 column, “Don’t Vote for Steve Poulton,” in which Thatcher attacked Poulton, who is running for state Senate in the 4th District. I could take the road frequently travelled, not standing up for anything or anybody and simply sink behind another article, angry, offended and embarrassed that my university publishes such unprofessional things. Or perhaps, the road even more often travelled, creating lies or slandering a person’s good name. But, I won’t.
Although the repulsive accusations that were published in a biased university paper will not have a huge impact on the 4th District elections, I want to be one of the few who stands up and speaks for something she believes in.
The things that have been written about Poulton cannot be taken back. However, I would like to tell you what kind of man Poulton is. I have known him for nearly 10 years. In that time I have seen the way he treats family members, high school students, other political leaders and any person with whom he comes in contact. He has always treated them with genuine respect and kindness.
I admire his sincerity and non-judgmental personality. He is not just another political shmoozer. He is consistent and loyal to his word. Too often I have seen candidates misrepresent themselves in order to be elected.
Poulton, however, is clear and honest about his values and ideas. He represents himself and his party with complete integrity. Perhaps people are just not comfortable with an honest politician! My vote is for Steve Poulton.
