Letter to the Editor: Columnist misunderstands labor history

Editor:

The main problem with Steve Wheelwright’s letter (“Marx was stupid and immoral,” Oct. 15) is that my friend has absolutely no idea what he is talking about.

Do you actually suggest that there is no such thing as classes in society? Do you think there is no distinction between rich and poor?

To understand Marx, you have to understand the time in which he lived, and the conditions of society during that time period. Capitalism was destroying people’s lives in the 1800s. Wheelwright should go down in history as somebody who has no understanding of the history of political economy, and someone who will never understand the plight of the working class until he is a member of it.
