While I may not be as gung-ho about recycling as some, I am astonished by the lack of foresight from the student leadership regarding their endeavors.
I live in the Benchmark student apartments and we have big blue recycling bins on each floor with labels on the top to remind us about what is recyclable and what is not.
For the most part, the recyclable items accepted seem fairly standard. Glass, office paper, etc. One obvious caveat to this is newspaper.
With the implementation of the student readership program, more pounds of newspaper are circulated on campus each day. You would think that allowing people to recycle these newspapers would be smart. You are wrong, as the signs on the bins clearly state you cannot place newspaper into them without killing 10 baby seals.
Now, I’m all for not killing baby seals, but why on earth can’t we recycle newspaper? A quick check of the Salt Lake City Sanitation and Refuse Web site (http://www.slcgov.com/PublicServices/Streets/recycleinfo.htm) clearly states that newspaper is accepted in its curbside pickup program. So student leadership wants us to recycle, and wants us to read, but God forbid the two should ever mix.
