New officers appointed to greek councils

Members of the greek community gathered Monday to install the new officers of the Inter-fraternity and Pan-Hellenic councils, which are the governing bodies for the U’s fraternities and sororities.

Officers stood before peers and pledged to “strive for academic integrity” as well as respect their property and the property of others.

“Communication with the neighbors is key,” said Courtney Smith, newly appointed PHC president. “I want them to feel comfortable in this neighborhood and keep happy and still let us be Greek Row.”

Many of the officers emphasized the communication among the neighbors and Greek Row. Tres Zaglool, IFC President, said he plans to visit different houses with other officers to introduce the new council members. He said that “things are good now” and he wants it to continue.

Other issues the councils will face include recruitment, alcohol abuse and unity among the greeks.

According to PHC recruitment chairperson Emily Schachter, “There is definitely a push for members,” and so the current focus for spring recruitment will be an informal open house on Jan. 29, where women can mingle with active members while making Valentine’s Day cards for Shriners Hospital. The men will host a Texas Hold ’em Tournament, according to Zaglool.

Afterward it is up to the chapters to hold their own recruitment events, depending on membership needs, Schachter said. She added that fall recruitment will not be as elaborate as in the past, and that it might take place over the weekend instead of during the school week, when many potential members are busy.

“I’m very excited for the new officers. They communicated with me over the holiday and all seem to be very enthusiastic,” said Lori McDonald, the assistant dean of students and adviser to the greeks.

McDonald’s advice to the new officers was to focus on recruitment and to maintain a positive relationship with the neighbors.
