The Ronald Reagan Day that Wasn’t
In L.J. Lither’s Feb. 10 article concerning symbolic legislation in the Utah Legislature, he mentioned a proposed resolution recognizing Ronald Reagan Day. Lither claimed that the bill stated that Ronald Reagan Day would be held every Feb. 6 and should be celebrated “fittingly.” However, the great irony of this resolution is that it did not designate every Feb. 6 as Ronald Reagan Day, only Feb. 6, 2005. However, the resolution didn’t even pass until Feb. 7, therefore making it a moot point. During debate in the House one representative asked if the bill could be amended so that Ronald Reagan Day would be recognized on Feb. 6, 2006 and therefore actually be commemorated. However, the House sponsor refused to entertain that idea. So, in essence, legislators passed a bill that did absolutely nothing. Gotta love ’em.
