Utes-At-A-Glance

Men’s Basketball

Junior forward Bryant Markson is listed as doubtful for Saturday’s game against BYU. Markson sprained his knee in Monday’s loss at New Mexico, limiting him to 18 minutes. He will be re-evaluated by team physicians later this week.

Women’s Tennis

The Utes (7-3) head to the Midwest for three matches this weekend. They will take on Kansas State (1-3), No. 38 Nebraska (8-1), and Kansas (1-6). “It will be a good measuring stick for our team’s progress,” head coach Megan Dorny said. “We have played four straight matches at home, so it will be a good challenge for us going back on the road.”

Men’s Tennis

The duo of sophomore Miron Mann and freshman Zach Ganger have debuted in the latest Intermountain Tennis Association doubles rankings. The pair is ranked No. 34 in the country with an 11-1 mark for the 6-0 Utes. Ganger has a 13-2 record in No. 2 singles, while Mann has an 11-3 mark from the No. 3 singles position. The Utes host Denver and Colorado this weekend at the Eccles Tennis Center.

Skiing

The ski team will compete in the West Region Championships this weekend in Montana. Prior to the event, last week’s weather-postponed New Mexico Invitational will be finished at the same site as the regional competition. The Utes are currently in fourth place in the UNM invitational. “This team is very fired up for the Western Regional Championships,” U coach Kevin Sweeney said. “We have struggled as a team putting solid scores together in all disciplines for most of the season, but I anticipate this to change. I feel it!” Following regionals, the Utes will have two weeks off before heading to Vermont for the NCAA championships March 9-12.

Lacrosse

The Ute lacrosse team opened the season .500 with a win and a loss in Arizona last weekend.

Rainy weather led to schedule alterations and relocations, but organizers still managed to squeeze in contests against Arizona and Arizona State.

The Utes toppled a tough ASU squad 15-11 on Friday. Mase Goodhand Jr. and James Brand each had hat tricks while goalie Jeremy Johnson held down the fort, making 17 saves.

The Sun Devils were coming off of a season opening victory against No. 19 Missouri.

No. 5 Arizona eeked out a 10-8 victory over the Utes after falling behind 4-1 by halftime.

Bryce Edwards tallied a hat trick in the loss, and Tom Fernandez added two goals and three assists.

Next up for the U is No. 9 Colorado in their home opener at Stillwell Field on March 4.

Soccer

The U has hired Leslie Weeks as an assistant soccer coach. She comes to Utah following a two-year gig at Portland State, where she mainly coached the goalkeepers. She helped the Vikings earn the 2004 Big Sky regular season championship. Weeks played collegiately at Washington, where she was a goalkeeper for the Huskies’ 2000 Pac-10 championship team. “She brings energy, great work ethic, insight and leadership to our team,” U head coach Rich Manning said. “We have a terrific group of young goalies and I’m looking forward to seeing them progress under Leslie’s direction.”
