America is built on protest

Editor:

Bart Gatrell doesn’t believe that the protestors at Sept. 24’s rally were patriotic (“War protestors’ arguments invalid; protesting unpatriotic,” Sept. 28). As a member of a university faculty, he ought to know better.

America was built on protest. Without protest, there would be no “American” values to spread across the globe; we’d all be spreading British values instead.

Every history book I’ve ever been assigned has called the perpetrators of the Boston Tea Party “American Patriots.” They were protesting something as mundane as taxes.

Knowing the history of our country, how can someone call protestors “disgusting” and demand recognition for being “patriotic” in the same letter?
