Swimmers split in Denver

The Ute men improved to 2-0 on the young season after knocking off Denver 193-141 over the weekend. The men won 12 of 18 events, which included the foursome of Matthew Bailey, David Maasberg, Jonathan Larsen and David Johnson setting a pool record in the 200 free relay, posting a time of 1 minute, 23.39 seconds.

The U women fell to the Pioneers 175-157, snapping their streak of 10 dual meet victories in a row. The women now stand at 1-1 on the season.

The swim team will host SDSU this Friday at 5 p.m. and UNLV on Saturday at noon. Both meets are at the Natatorium.

Beardall earning national attention

After another stellar weekend, Ute senior placekicker Dan Beardall has been named a semifinalist for the Groza Award, the annual trophy given to the nation’s top kicker. He was 3-of-3 in the Utes 43-13 win over Wyoming on Saturday, tying a school record with his 11th consecutive successful field goal. The three finalists for the award will be announced on Nov. 21.
