Writing course helps raise funds for third-world aid

By Hikari Hite

U students from Writing 3400, Professional Writing, composed and customized a script for the live auction at the 13th annual CHOICE Humanitarian fund-raising gala.

KTVX 4 News anchors Barbara Smith and Chris Vanocur hosted the event and read the students’ script.

“It was a lovely evening, and the money raised goes to the best of causes,” Smith said about the Oct. 29 event. “I felt the script effectively conveyed that message and touched the hearts of those who attended.”

The professional writing project helped garner $78,000 directly from competitive audience bidding.

The writing assignment was to work with the Bennion Center in finding ways to contribute to the professional writing needs of a non-profit community group.

The group also produced promotional materials to advertise the live auction items.

The mission of CHOICE Humanitarian is to provide aid to villagers in countries such as Guatemala, Mexico, Bolivia and Kenya by improving their quality of life.
