U track shines at Athletes Invitational

A.J. Roby and Amanda Feight each came away with first-place finishes this weekend, as the U indoor track and field team competed in Nampa, Idaho, at the Athletes Invitational, hosted by Boise State University.

Roby won the shot put (42-4.75), and finished in third place behind fellow Ute Vanessa Mortensen in the weight throw.

“Our throws crew continues to do an outstanding job,” Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. “Coach Kuusela and his crew really are getting the job done and continue to improve each week.”

Feight took the top spot in the long jump (19-4.25) and was followed by freshman Haley McAllister (18-00.5).

The Ute runners also put in several strong showings.

Ashlee Warnick led all U runners in the 3,000 meter with a third-place finish (10:34.04) while Chelsea DiGrazia (10:34.40) and Kellie Anderson (10:34.59) finished immediately afterward for fourth and fifth place.

Nicki Hugie and Janett Ern also ran well for Utah. Hugie finished second in the mile run (5:11.22) and Ern collected a second-place finish in the 800 meter (2:19.46).

Nikki Mancinelli finished third in the high jump (5-02.25).

“Overall, it was another successful meet,” Kepler said. “We had some very strong efforts, and probably the most outstanding efforts came in the 3,000-meter run.”

The Utes will compete next in the Mountain States Games Feb. 3 in Pocatello, Idaho.
