Danger, excitement and enlightenment-Mozart!

By Matt Barney

This Saturday at Capitol Theatre, there will be earthquakes, adventure, lions, tigers and bears.

What forest of danger awaits concertgoers? None other than Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s immaculate “The Magic Flute.”

It all begins when Sarastro (Alfred Walker) abducts Pamina (played by Jennifer Aylmer), the daughter of the Queen of Night (Amanda Pabyan). But, far from being just another ne’er-do-well, Sarastro does so for good reason-to remove Pamina from the negative influence of her mother.

Prince Tamino (played by Scott Murphree) becomes friends with Pagageno (Carlos Archuleta), the Queen’s bird catcher. Both are chosen by the Queen to recapture Pamina. In attempting this-surprise-Pamina and Tamino fall in love and, to be sure, adventures ensue.

Using the namesake of the opera, the two lovers embark on a series of challenges that test their mettle.

Mozart’s operatic oeuvre is a blend of swashbuckling adventure and magic. Expect fun times all around.

But what else (besides a delightful story) should one expect at the opening night? In particular, listen for the famous aria, “Song of the Night Queen.”
