Some greek students are wary for their safety after a woman was attacked near Greek Row in the early hours of Aug. 23.
The woman is not a U student, but is of college age and attends school in Michigan, said Danny Rogers and Gary Hrechkosy, two U fraternity members who ran to help after hearing her cries.
“We heard her scream ‘get off me, get off me!’,” Rogers said.
The Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity members, who arrived on the scene after the assault had taken place, said the woman told them she was sitting in the back of a pickup truck talking on her cell phone when the attacker came from behind, grabbed her around the chest and tried to pull her out of the vehicle.
The victim began screaming and yelling before breaking free from her assailant and fleeing across the street to her home. The attacker escaped the scene without being spotted by the students, Rogers and Hrechkosy said.
The attack occurred on Federal Way a block away from 100 South, where the majority of fraternity and sorority houses are located.
The men said they were walking in the alley near their fraternity house just after midnight the morning of Aug. 23 when they heard the woman’s screams and ran to see if they could help her. Once on the scene, they said, the woman was running inside her house and the attacker was gone.
Rogers and Hrechkosy said they didn’t know whether their presence or the woman’s screams scared the attacker off before he was able to seriously harm her.
“We’re glad we were out there,” Rogers said.
Hrechkosy said the victim described her attacker in a manner similar to the way a “peeping tom” who has recently been spotted looking into the windows of sorority houses has been described.
He said the woman described her attacker as a 6-foot white male wearing a black ski mask and black sweats.
“This isn’t the first reporting of this individual with a black ski mask-he’s usually a peeper,” Hrechoksy said. But, he said, “it’s not just a peeper anymore.”
Lori McDonald, U greek adviser, said she hadn’t heard of any peeper matching that description, but had heard of an odd-looking man wearing black clothing walking around Greek Row. McDonald has cautioned all greeks, especially women, to stay in groups at night and to be aware of their surroundings.
Nancy Nazarina, president of the Panhellenic Council, said she had heard of a peeper bothering women during the summer but did not know if he fit the description.
She said the incident was shocking to the women on Greek Row.
“It’s just kind of scary that someone like that is in an area with so many college-aged (women),” Nazarina said of the attacker.
The Salt Lake City Police Department has not released the victim’s name and is investigating the case as an attempted kidnapping. Any information related to the case should be reported to the police at 799-3000.
