U professor appointed visiting position at Oxford

Kenneth W. Spitzer, professor of physiology, was appointed visiting professor of cardiac cellular electrophysiology at Oxford University.

Spitzer will be teaching in the departments of physiology, anatomy and genetics. His appointment was based on the relationship he has with Oxford professor Richard Vaughn and their collaborative research on pH regulation in heart cells.

Presidential Early Career Award presented to U assistant professor

Yihua (Bruce) Yu, assistant professor of pharmaceutics and pharmaceutical chemistry, was awarded the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers.

This is the U.S. government’s highest honor for researchers in early stages of their careers.

U Professors awarded program grant to study proteins

Chi-Bin Chien, associate professor of neurobiology and anatomy, and Kuberan Balagurunathan, assistant professor of medicinal chemistry, were awarded one of 20 program grants from the International Human Frontier Science Program.

They will each be given $87,500 annually for three years to study proteoglycans, a protein class that is important in the growth of nerve fibers and cellular signaling.
