Man arrested at Primary Children’s Medical Center

By Ana Breton

Police arrested a man at Primary Children’s Medical Center on an outstanding warrant for one count of child abuse and neglect, a second-degree felony.

The U Police Department arrested Mark Robert Maes on Tuesday for allegedly physically abusing his one-and-a-half-year-old daughter on Jan. 1.

The West Valley Police Department filed charges in February, but was unable to locate Maes until March 3, when Maes was spotted visiting his daughter, who had been admitted to the hospital.

Maes’ daughter, who is now six months old, was taken to the hospital with shaken baby syndrome after her mother allegedly dropped her on the ground.

The incident was an accident and not abuse, said Capt. T. McLachlan, with the WVPD.

The Department of Child and Family Services has become involved in the investigation.

Maes, who has another young child, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail, where bail was set at $50,000.
