Campus museums free for students

By Carlos Mayorga

Students wanting to take a break from classes once Fall Semester begins might consider a visit to one of the museums on campus.

Admission to both the Utah Museum of Fine Arts and the Utah Museum of Natural History is always free for U students, faculty and staff.

Utah Museum of Fine Arts

Current exhibits at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts include “Africa: Arts of a Continent,” which features art from various regions of Africa. The exhibit, which runs through 2010, is in addition to the UMFA’s permanent collection of African art.

Also at UMFA is “Journeys through Asian Art,” which features art from India, the Himalayas, Southeast Asia, Japan, Korea and China. The exhibit also runs through 2010.

Additionally, several traveling exhibits are put on display during the year.

The UMFA has a permanent collection of art from all over the globe, a caf and a museum store.

The museum is closed every Monday and is located at 410 Campus Central Drive. For more information, visit www.umfa.utah.edu.

Utah Museum of Natural History

The exhibit “Toadally Frogs!” runs through Sept. 3 at the Utah Museum of Natural History. It features more than 30 species of live frogs of various sizes and colors, brought in from all over the globe.

The UMNH also has permanent features, such as the museum’s earthquake exhibit, where visitors can create their own earthquake and learn how to measure seismic activity.

Permanent collections at the UMNH include dinosaur fossils, rocks and minerals and an exhibit about local mining history, featuring a replica of a mine that visitors can walk through.

The UMNH is located at 1390 E. Presidents’ Circle. It is open seven days a week. Hours vary. For more information, visit www.umnh.utah.edu.
