Need a date? Buy one

By Tina Siu

Adam Young was auctioned off Friday night during Crimson Nights.

He had hoped to receive at least $25, but ended $5 shy of that goal.

“I’m really just here to ‘rock the U,'” said Young, an associate director of campus relations in the Union Programming Council.

Rock the U, an Associated Students of the University of Utah group that organizes a dance marathon and other events to raise money for cancer research, hosted the auction in which 30 students were auctioned off with a date package donated by local businesses.

The date packages included dinner and an activity, and were sponsored by La-Cai Noodle House, Iggy’s Sports Grill, AllStar Lanes, California Pizza Kitchen, several community theaters and the Utah Symphony.

Rock the U’s auction raised $1,645, which will be donated to the Huntsman Cancer Foundation, a nonprofit organization that funds cancer research and treatment. Rock the U Director Chelsea Baugh said she hoped to raise $2,500 at the auction this year. Last year’s event brought in $3,000.

Elyse Woodbury, secretary of special projects in the ASUU business assembly, was auctioned off for $40.

Woodbury said she’s “glad the money (went) to the Huntsman Cancer Foundation” and felt the auction was a success.

Madison Warren, director of Crimson Nights, was auctioned off for the most amount of money ($300) to Ray Phillips, a senior in finance.

Lauren Christensen and Nicola Saliendra, both members of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, bought ASUU President Spencer Pearson for $180 and Greg Stillman, ASUU’s chief of staff, for $60, respectively.

“They’re great guys and it’s for a great cause so it’s worth it,” Christensen said.

Last year the group raised $93,000 through individual and corporate donations and donated the money to the Huntsman Cancer Foundation.

Baugh said the group hopes to raise twice as much money and has set a goal of $200,000.

Kencee Graves, a group spokesperson, said Rock the U hopes to host new fund-raising events about every three weeks.

Upcoming fund-raising events will include a volleyball tournament and a 24-hour dance marathon.
