Year in review: Basketball coach Giacoletti resigns

March 2

A first-year Sweet Sixteen appearance wasn’t enough to overshadow two disappointing campaigns with coach Ray Giacoletti at the helm of Ute men’s basketball, and he resigned with one regular season game left.

“Obviously, our vision three years ago is not the way it has gone, especially this year,” Giacoletti said.

The Utes selected former Michigan State assistant coach Jim Boylen to fill the post after a promising but ill-timed bid for Milwaukee Bucks assistant coach Larry Krystkowiak. Krystkowiak was named Bucks head coach when Terry Stotts was fired. Boylen served under legendary Spartans coach Tom Izzo for two years before coming to the U and also worked as an assistant to Rudy Tomjanovich for 11 seasons, winning two NBA titles.
