Year in review: Office of Sustainability opens

By Arthur Raymond

October 4

As part of the U’s efforts to become more environmentally conscious, U President Michael Young announced the new Office of Sustainability, an administrative branch created to coordinate environmental efforts on campus.

Earlier in the year, U administration, facilities and the Associated Students of the University of Utah joined together to initiate a campus-wide recycling program that was launched this summer. Through the program, more than 10,000 containers for recyclable paper products were placed in buildings and Residence Halls, director of Plant Operations Cory Higgins said. By the time all bins are placed, there should be close to 15,000, Higgins said.

The student government instituted a campaign to raise awareness among students, faculty and staff on how to utilize the new system.

The new efforts have met with a high level of success, according to facilities managers, and the program has expanded.
