Year in review: Trolley Square shooting

By Ana Breton

February 12

Bosnian refugee Sulejman Talovic walked into the Trolley Square Mall armed with a shotgun, a handgun and numerous rounds of ammunition and opened fire. In fewer than six minutes, 18-year-old Talovic had killed five individuals and injured four others before being fatally shot by responding police officers. Off-duty officer Kenneth Hammond from Ogden, who was dining at Rodizio Grill with his pregnant wife, heard the initial gunshots and exchanged fire with Talovic until SWAT and police teams arrived.

Victims who died include Jeffrey Walker, 52, whose son, 16-year-old Alan “AJ” Walker was also shot but survived; Vanessa Quinn, 29, of Sandy; Kirsten Hinckley, 15, whose mother, Carolyn Tuft, 44, has recovered from injuries after being shot; Teresa Ellis, 29, and her boyfriend Brad Frantz, 24, who were both fatally shot; and Stacy Hanson, 50, who was shot but survived.
