Five events better than prime time

By Danny Letz

Photographer Craig Denton’s ongoing exhibit, “Bear River: Last Chance to Change Course,” showcases the majesty of the Bear River from all angles while highlighting the importance of conservation by acknowledging the river’s role in our lives. Do not miss this beautiful exhibition of realization, as December will be its last month at the UMNH.

2. Fri., Dec. 7Eric Overton: Studies of the Living BodyAline Wilmot Skaggs Biology Building (259 S. 1400 East) 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.Free

Science and art collide in Eric Overton’s startling photographic depictions of life in all its forms, from all of the eye’s perspectives. Venture into the ASB building this Friday to experience biology in its most breathtaking form.

3. Sun., Dec. 9Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Lecture on the EnvironmentEccles Center for the Performing Arts (1750 Kearns Blvd., Park City) 5:30 p.m.$18 and $30

Join the Great Salt Lakekeeper and the Park City Arts Foundation in welcoming environmental activist-attorney-best-selling author Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to Salt Lake City. Kennedy’s reputation as a spokesman on environmental matters and position as chairman of the board of Waterkeeper Alliance promises to make this presentation on the role of our natural surroundings in work, play and national identity much more than radical rant.

4. Sun., Dec. 9Red Light Film Series: “Band of Outsiders”Red Light Books (179 E. 300 South) 7 p.m.Free (donations accepted)

Red Light Books is slowly making a name for itself as Salt Lake City’s premier source for underground culture, extreme music and, in its most recent undertaking, avant-garde film. The shop’s new film series will host Jean-Luc Godard’s 1964 avant-classic “Band of Outsiders,” this coming Sunday. Godard’s low-fi crime tale is often written off as one of his more obscure, but what better way to celebrate the underground than in its grimiest fashion?

5. Tues., Dec. 11Sage’s Cafe Pizza NightSage’s Cafe (473 E. 300 South) 5 p.m to 9:30 p.m.$11

What could be better than all-you-can-eat pizza? All-you-can-eat organic, gourmet, vegan pizza! Right? Okay, fear of trashing your favorite grease-soaked, meat-covered pie might have you accusing the Redux editors of being girly-boys right about now, but stop — you’re totally not impressing that cute environmental studies major sitting next to you who you’ve secretly been crushing on all semester. Exercise some cultural acceptance and head on down to Salt Lake City’s most-loved veg-taurant, Sage’s Cafe, to experience an unlimited dose of pizza and salad with compassion.
