Lobos capture MWC’s automatic NCAA bid

By Cody Brunner

LAS VEGAS – San Diego State’s Quenese Davis rimmed out a 3-point attempt at the buzzer and New Mexico escaped the Thomas & Mack Center with the MWC Women’s Championship, 62-59. The Aztecs trailed by four with less 15 seconds to go before Davis drilled a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to one. The Lobos’ Amy Beggin was sent to the free-throw line on the ensuing possession and hit both of her freebies and Davis’ rebuttal narrowly missed its mark. New Mexico’s Brandi Kimball and Dionne Marsh were the difference in the game. Kimball led all scorers with 22 points and also recorded nine rebounds and three steals. Marsh finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Both were named to the All-tournament Team and Marsh was named the MVP. Joining the duo with All-Tournament Team honors was San Diego State’s Allison Duffy and Jene Morris, as well as Colorado State’s Sara Hunter.
