Baseball: Snow day

By Cody Brunner

The U’s baseball game against Utah Valley State College scheduled for Tuesday afternoon was canceled because of snow and rain showers in the Salt Lake City area.

The cancellation marks the third time this season a U baseball game was either postponed or canceled because of weather, having canceled a game at San Jose, Calif., on Feb. 24 then postponing a game against Air Force scheduled for March 30.

The Utes will have to wait a little longer for the chance to wash the bad taste out of their collective mouth left from three losses to San Diego State last weekend. One of those losses came at the hands of Aztec pitcher Stephen Strasburg, who was named the MWC Pitcher of the Week after holding the Utes to a one-hitter April 11.

Utah will resume action this Friday when it heads to Albuquerque, N.M., for a three-game series against the Lobos. New Mexico is on the opposite end of the spectrum from the Utes in terms of momentum heading into this weekend. The Lobos are currently in the midst of a four-game winning streak and are second in the MWC with an 8-4 conference record. Some of that streak can be credited to reigning MWC Player of the Week Kevin Atkinson. Atkinson batted .550 (11-for-20) last weekend, including four home runs, two doubles, one triple, 11 RBI and 10 runs scored.
