The Drop (4/17): Chronicle’s guide for the music store

By Makena Walsh

April 17Lucky I Am (of The Living Legends)$89 p.m.The Urban Lounge(241 S. 500 East)

The fashion-savvy Luckyiam PSC is a member of the Cali-based, underground, hip-hop super group known as The Living Legends. Lucky is easily distinguished from his legendary brethren by his white, ’60s era sunglasses and playful sense of humor. His new album, Most Likely to Succeed, is his first effort as a solo artist. It’s also a showcase of Lucky’s incredible networking skills, as it features the likes of Slug, Aesop Rock, Dirt Nasty and Mickey Avalon on a few of its 13 tracks.

April 22Minus The Bear$15.50/$187 p.m.In the Venue(579 W. 200 South)

Seattle-based math rockers Minus the Bear weave humorous, sometimes poignant, but always entertaining lyrics over sophisticated time signatures, sporadic guitar taps and electronic tomfoolery. The bonus CD for their third full-length and most recent release, Planet of Ice, features a remix by punk-rock rapper P.O.S. — a testament to the group’s eclectic musical tastes. You can’t go wrong with a band whose first album was titled Highly Refined Pirates.

April 23Ben Folds$34.506 p.m.Saltair(12408 W. Salt Air Drive, Magna)

The young Ben Folds began playing his Elton John/Billy Joel-style ballads on the piano his dad had accepted as payment for some carpentry work. After various odd jobs in the performing arts arena, Folds eventually wound up at the University of Miami’s illustrious music program (where he would drop out three credits shy of earning his degree). He eventually made his way back to North Carolina and signed his new band, Ben Folds Five, to Caroline Records. The rest, as they say, is history. In characteristically philanthropic Ben Folds fashion, all the proceeds for this show go to the Care for Cambodia charity.
