U hires new assistant VP for diversity

By Rita Totten, Staff Writer

The U Office for Diversity recently hired Jennifer Williams-Molock to fill a new administrative position designed to help the U work more closely with diversity-related student groups. As the new assistant vice president for student diversity on campus, Williams-Molock will oversee all diversity-related student groups on campus and focus on student diversity issues.

“The assistant VP for student diversity would supervise different centers and programs to enhance their success on campus,” said Octavio Villalpando, associate vice president in the Office for Diversity. “We want this individual to devote 100 percent of their time to assisting the students who are underrepresented.”

Before coming to the U, Williams-Molock was special assistant to the vice president for student affairs at Colorado State University.

U President Michael Young recommended the diversity office create the position to put a stronger focus on student diversity issues.

The Center for Ethnic Student Affairs, the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Resource Center and other student groups will be under the supervision of the assistant vice president position.

“This position would allow for more time to be spent on student affairs and diversity issues,” said Cathy Martinez, director of the LGBT Resource Center.

More student groups will be able to complement each other and collaborate together, Martinez said.

Scott McAward, director of the Center for Disability Services, said he believes this position will benefit a lot of students.

“I definitely think there is a need for this position,” he said. “Anytime you can bridge academic and student affairs, it is a positive thing.”
