Redfest free for students

By Chris Mumford

Students tired of seeing the cost of everything from tuition to food go up can at least enjoy this year’s Redfest for free.

Leftover funds from last year’s budget for the annual concert allowed Associated Students of the University of Utah presenter’s office director Cameron Hansen to make this year’s show8212;featuring Slightly Stoopid and Dilated Peoples8212;free for students.

The Presenter’s Office didn’t feel the $5 entry fee charged in previous years was likely to bring in enough money to be worth burdening the students, Hansen said.

“We’ve kind of really been smart with the money this year,” Hansen said, explaining that his board has been trying to find ways to trim the budget for the event.

iving the entry fee was intended in part to get more students to attend the show, Hansen said.

ASUU distributed more than 6,000 tickets as of Thursday evening, and ASUU accountant Rob Phillips said he expected the event to fill the 8,000 capacity by sometime Friday afternoon.

Leftover funds were used to eliminate the over-budgeted cost of the 2006 Redfest, a massive three-day event that included performances by Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Yellow Card.
This year’s Redfest begins at 6 p.m. tonight in the Union Free Speech area.
