Gun education would deflect misconceptions

Luigi Ghersi / The Daily Utah Chronicle

Basic knowledge of guns should be a requirement in today’s society. This knowledge would contribute to the safety of Americans in both rural and urban lifestyles.
Part of the reason there is such a vast opinion gap in our current gun control debate is that guns are portrayed in the media in a black-and-white fashion. The media would like us to think there is no middle ground when it comes to guns. Because the media either depict guns in a negative or a positive manner, this persuades audiences to only feel one way about the issue, and to think — whatever their position — that their opposition is wrong.
But there is a way to find this middle ground — through mandatory gun education.
Clark Aposhian, chairman of Utah Shooting Sports Council, addressed this issue at a gun policy discussion at the Hinckley Institute of Politics on March 4.
One example, albeit a small one, illustrating the nuances of the gun debate is that the abbreviation AR might be interpreted to refer to assault rifles, when it is in fact an abbreviation for Armelite, a gun manufacturer.
The media tends to use the word “assault” in abundance, partly in reference to reporting, but mostly to demonize guns and depict them as weapons of destruction.
According to Aposhian, less than 1 percent of crimes are committed with semi-automatic weapons, that is, assault weapons.
Instead of coming to black-and-white conclusions about guns, we should look at what causes the kinds of gun use resulting in homicide. This is the matter that needs to be resolved if we are to seriously commit to reducing gun violence.
The fact is that gun crime is not spread evenly across the nation. Gun violence is higher in urban neighborhoods, and poverty and gang prevalence might be causal factors of urban gun violence, according to Asposhian. It is not an appropriate inference, then, to connect mere gun ownership with criminal activity.
Knowing and identifying the means through which people come to own weapons would also be a positive step toward understanding the origins of gun violence.
Knowledge of guns and gun violence is necessary for society to arrive at a reasonable consensus on guns.
It’s at that place of clarity that a resolution can be found for the mass homicides that we have recently seen.

I usually do not drop a leave a response, however
I browsed a few remarks here Gun education would deflect misconceptions | The Daily Utah Chronicle.
I do have a couple of questions for you if you do not mind.
Could it be only me or does it seem like some of the comments come across like they are
written by brain dead individuals? 😛 And, if you are writing at additional online social sites, I would like
to keep up with you. Would you make a list of every one of all your social
sites like your Facebook page, twitter feed, or linkedin profile?

I’m not sure why but this site is loading very slow for me. Is anyone else having this problem or is it a issue on my end? I’ll check back later and see if the problem still exists.

Thanks, UofU, for making conceal-carry legal all those years ago. The total lack of gun crime or assaults or basically anything bad coming from a legally permitted gun carrier on Utah’s campus, made for a powerful argument here in Colorado when our senate was considering banning carry on campus statewide.
Fortunately, all those in favor sounded like Richard, so that bill died before making it to the governor’s desk.

I am all in favor of gun education, just not the mandatory part. Richard, just because people like and own guns does not make them “gun wackos.” The 2nd amendment says that I can own and carry weapons and that nobody gets to tell me that I can’t. Also, the State of Utah says that I can also carry on campus, so you will have to deal with it. If you don’t like it, maybe you can move to Chicago, where gun control is working so well.

The letter of the law may allow gun ownership and concealed weapons on campus, but we as citizens are obliged to at least question the wisdom of any law. And especially that one, I think. At any rate, “love of or leave it” is fundamentally antithetical to a democratic society.

Mandatory gun education? How about you take your gun or guns, get them the hell off my campus and cram them where the sun don’t shine.
Gun wackos, get your deadly weapons out of my face and my life.
How about mandatory pacifism training for gun crazies?
