Reese: The LDS Church has a White Nationalist Problem
September 10, 2019
White nationalist activity is on the rise in the United States, and the state of Utah is no exception. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Utah’s most dominant religious and cultural influence, has always had fringe white nationalists within its membership, many of whom first learned their ideas about racial superiority from the church’s own doctrines of a “white and a delightsome people.” The internet has allowed communities of Latter-day Saint white supremacism to flourish, often anonymously hiding behind profile photos of past prophets and tagging their alt-right faction as DezNat, a hashtag short for “Deseret Nation.”
Like many alt-right groups, DezNat was not taken particularly seriously when they first started to appear around 2018. ABC 4 News reported on their activity but failed to address the seriousness of this growing group of white nationalists who consider themselves acting on the wishes of one of the largest institutions in Utah. Members of DezNat argue that they do not have an ideology and are only motivated by a desire to “follow the prophet,” as written by one member, Tanner Guzy. In what seems to be some sort of overcompensation, Guzy has based his Twitter in painful efforts to portray himself as a strong, traditional, masculine man. He does a good job of normalizing white nationalism, making it look compatible with the lifestyle and beliefs of the average Latter-day Saint guy, and he is just one of the many pushing a hateful, racist and vile ideology — one I believe that the LDS Church leaders would not agree with.
DezNat claims not to have any formal organization, but they do share an ideology far more sinister than Guzy’s vague claims of loyalty. DezNat believes they are the true followers of Christ and the prophet, that they alone interpret doctrine properly among Latter-day membership and that they must fight against the empowerment and expression of LGBTQ people, socialists, minorities, women and progressive members of the church.
One Reddit user described DezNat as “some sort of far-right Mormon circle jerk,” but DezNat is not a small, harmless group. It is cultivating a strong following of fellow Latter-day Saints who join the online movement, most keeping their real identities hidden. The Deseret Nation YouTube channel provides perspective into the group’s beliefs with videos promoting the subservience of women, anti-vaccination activism and variations of the flat-earth conspiracy. Hundreds of DezNat accounts regularly pop up on Twitter (some, of course, are taken down) with many targeting the LGBTQ community, women, people of color and even non-American white people (some in DezNat are extreme enough to have a thing against Europeans, who they refer to as Europooreans).
I have had my own interactions on Twitter with members of this group who have targeted me because of my sexuality. The user who harassed me (as well as several others) used “Warren Jeffs Groyper” as their screen name. Warren Jeffs is the imprisoned leader of the FLDS Church who was incarcerated in 2011 for the sexual assault of underage girls. The term “groyper” refers “to an exploitable illustration of Pepe the Frog resting his chin on interlinked hands, variations of which are commonly used as profile avatars among the alt-right and new right on Twitter.”
While his attempted insults were pathetic and unoriginal, it was also ironic that he called me a pedophile (and claimed I was “turned gay” by being raped by a pedophile as a child) while his own profile image was that of a convicted pedophile. However, he did give me a good name, “an actual sodomite degenerate,” in case I ever decide to start a punk band.
While myself and many other targets of DezNat harassment may joke about the idiocy of this Mormon-brand white nationalism, it should not be taken lightly. As well as being targeted myself, I have seen a DezNat account tag ICE in a conversation with a Latinx user. DezNat is more than happy to weaponize the government law enforcement agency responsible for family separation, racial profiling and imprisonment of immigrants from Central and South America. As the Trump Administration continues its inhumane immigration policies, this threat to Latinx people within the U.S. only grows.
The church should be highly aware of the hateful rhetoric its members spew using the names and images of prophets and church doctrine online. This is especially needed as national violence rises and the church wishes to be an open, safe environment for all members. Leadership has already issued a statement condemning the separation of families at the border, and it must create an environment without racial animus toward converts from the high amounts of mission work in Central and South American and African countries.
Church leadership has done this before, such as its role in subduing the Ku Klux Klan’s growth in Utah. The church has a doctrinal opposition to the KKK, as it is a secret society. In the 1920s, the KKK was growing all over the U.S. (including Utah) and gaining both political and social influence. In 1925, a black man was lynched twice while over 1000 Utahns watched and overpowered law enforcement efforts to break up the crowd. Governor George H. Dern spoke out, saying, “Lynching is a crime and a disgrace to the state. Use all proper measures.” His demands for legal action resulted in the arrest of 11 men, some of whom were members of law enforcement.
Opposition also came from the church, and its past efforts to stop the KKK shows that DezNat fails to follow its own doctrine, the claimed “core” of their faith. Much like the KKK, DezNat members communicate through secret channels and fake identities to spread violent, racist rhetoric. Make no mistake — DezNat itself is a secret society.
The church has a moral responsibility to address the growing white nationalism within its membership. It would be wise to excommunicate members who spew such vile hatred and declare that their actions represent the faith and the word of God. If this is not nipped in the bud, other members may become vulnerable to white nationalism. While they may hide their identity online, many DezNat members are active members, parents, neighbors and local leaders in Utah communities. The church must do everything in its power — and its power is great— to use education and advocacy to eradicate the white nationalism in the psyche of some members. The church has an alt-right problem and they must be the ones to end it.

“the lds church has a white nationalist problem”
idiotic nonsense.
if we did we would not send missionaries to non-white countries.

Couple questions for CF:
So since Jesus had darker skin, was he less valiant in his first estate? What you are spreading is not what a loving, kind father in heaven would do. Do you believe god is as unkind as you?
Most importantly, why is it that the more time I spend in the light, the darker my skin gets? Did god just not think that one through when he created the sun?

Wow! I just want say I don’t agree with the author. I’ve just been accused of being a #DezNat er. I didn’t even know what that was. There may be many with different views taking that hashtag and name, but the guy that invented the hashtag isn’t at all what is described in this article. That’s my 2 cents

Not really surprised coming from a church that was started by bigoted scum and still is run by such scum. Allowing one form of hate against anyone such as gays enables it in general. If the prophet is real, why doesn’t he just ask God to reveal the names of the perps?

Good Lord this is all scary stuff. I have been a member of the Church for over 30 years and I once thought of it as a peaceful and calming influence in my life. I have one (soon to be two) feet out the door and this sort of garbage within the Church membership is pushing me away. Unfortunately, from my perspective at least, the Church has an authoritarian structure but is exhibiting very weak leadership In this time of great societal change. And I for one look to the Church for guidance and, finding none, I am drifting away. I find much more peace in the loving arms of my formerly bisexual girlfriend. And maybe I’m going to hell, but the Savior is the Prince of Peace and the Church has become less and less of a refuge.

My local temple president, who is in my ward, brought up an interesting comment yesterday in Sunday School. He said that the degrees of glory in 1 Corinthians 15 is not only a spiritual place, but also a physical manifestation of righteousness. The lighter the color of your body indicates the degree of righteous choices you made in the previous life. So in the Kingdoms of Glory, people living in the Celestial Kingdom will be brighter/whiter than the noonday sun, while those living in the terrestrial kingdom will be darker. Same thing goes for those living on the Earth today, those with lighter skin color were more righteous in their First Estate in the premortal existence, than those with darker skin. This certainly lines up with the cursing the Lord gave different groups throughout history by darkening their skin after breaking their covenants.

I am the Deseret Nation youtube channel that you erroneously slander. Members of the true Deseret Nation reported this article to me this morning. My channel has nothing to do with the supposed movement that you have mentioned. The Deseret Nation is a political movement and has nothing to do with the Church. You do not have to be a member of the Church to join the Deseret Nation. All those who use the DezNat name to promote doctrines rejected by the Church are false Deseret Nations that I reject. The purpose of the Deseret Nation is to create a culture to oppose the culture of Babylon the Great in preparation for the coming Kingdom of God. We learn to make our own clothing and our own food. We practice herbology and self healing. We study the scriptures and seek to fulfill all the commandments given to us in the scriptures. The seven goals of the Deseret Nation are: 1) Restore lost Deseret culture to members of the Church to oppose the culture of Babylon the Great. 2) Restoration of the Constitution to the corrupted Babylonian government. 3) Restoration of Desert lands to the people of Deseret and peaceful separation from the United States. 4) Installment of First Presidency of the Church as head of the Deseret Nation Government with our own free and independent government at all levels of state. 5) Installment of the Law of God as the Law of Deseret. 6) Re-Activation of the Nauvoo Legion (Deseret Militia) for self-defense. 7) Establishment of Jesus Christ as King of Deseret and the bringing in of all nations in to the Kingdom of Christ. All nations, people, colors, creeds are welcome to join the Deseret Nation and prepare themselves for the Kingdom of God.

@Arnold – Yes, I am proud white nationalist because the Book of Mormon is a white nationalist book. I just showed you all the Scriptures that back this up.
Read the preamble of the Constitution. Signed in 1788, it says that this land is only for the people who lived in America at that time, and their “posterity”. The same Constitutional signers also passed the “Naturalization Act” of 1790 which state that immigration to America could only be “free whites of good character”.
The American founders were inspired by God, just as the writers of the Book of Mormon. LDS members rejecting these principles are in apostasy. This land was God-given for white European descendants and nobody else, just s Japan is for the Japanese, India is for Indians, and Tanzania is for the Tanzanians. Every people should have a nation of their own.
Do you have a real argument or just personal insults?
You have little understanding what Christ-like love is. Carefully read John 14: 19- 22, and again in John 15. Jesus explains that Gods love is NOT unconditional, that God and Jesus only love you if you obey his commandments. Jesus explains in John 15 that He is not your “friend” if you don’t obey His commmandments. He asks us to love others in the same way he loves us, by expecting them to obey Gods commandments first.
This principle is describe clearly in Lehi’s dream in the Book of Mormon. The only people that received God’s love were those that held to the iron rod, Gods commandments, first. This concept is repeated in Alma 5 where Alma discusses that Gods love is called “redeeming love”, that is to mean that God’s love has conditions.

The 12 apostles who lead the Church include a German, a Brazilian, a Chinese American fluent in Mandarin who worked in the US State Department, and others who have lived in Africa, Latin America and Japan. The Presiding Bishop Gerald Causse is from Framce. The Seventy include people from many nations and ethnicities. It is an international body that leads an international.church. someone who thinks racial discrimination is compatible with the teachings of the Church has not been watching the General Conferences held every 6 months, where leaders from around the world speak and teach that all humans are children of the same Heavenly Father. A visitor to Temple Square in Salt Lake City will be greeted by young women missionaries from around the world who can speak to visitors in their native languages. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is one of the most ethnicslly diverse organizations based in the USA. That was discovered by visitors to Utah during the 2002 Winter Olympics, who found people who speak their language at the competition venues, at stores, at hotels, and restaurants., all volunteers, many of whom had lived in the visitors’ home nations. When they retire, many Latter-day Saints volunteer to do Church service back in the nations where they had served as young adults. A former co-worker and his wife served two years in a predominantly bkack area of Nrw Jersey, then served in Hong Kong.

The Chirch of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has 16 million members in 150 countries. There are 6 million members in the US, of all ethnicities. There are more Spanish speaking LDS than English speakers.. There are close to a million LDS of African dedcent in the US, Haiti, Domin8can Republic, and African nations including Ghana, Nogeria, Kenya, Congo, and South Africa. There are a million LDS in Asia and Polynesia. Every year the Chirch calls 35,000 new young men and women as missionaries around the world. Thpusands from the US learn new languages and live for two years among people of Asia, Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America.

1 – CF is clearly a white nationalist and I’m a little surprised their comment was approved on this site – in any case, whoever that is has come serious issues and should be reported somehow or be going to some serious therapy.
2 – I doubt that white nationalists who claim to be Christian of any denomination have ever read the four gospels, given that they certainly don’t adhere to Jesus’ commandment to love all people. They’re Nazis trying and succeeding to infiltrate U.S. religions and should and must be stopped.
3 – Isaac Reese makes several excellent points in this piece, which I as a person who currently attends an LDS church completely, 100% agree with. Great piece Isaac. You said what needed to be said, a message which more people both outside and within the LDS religion must continue to share as much as possible. There should be no room for hatred or intolerance towards any person anywhere.
4 – White nationalists who claim to be Mormon, specifically, should all be forced to read this talk by Ulisses Soares, a POC general authority, about why diversity is important: https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/general-conference/2018/10/one-in-christ?lang=eng

“The Book of Mormon is the most correct of any book on this Earth, and the keystone of our religion, and a man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than any other book.” Joseph Smith
FAIR:
* (of a person) having a light complexion or blond hair. . Google Dictionary
* not dark. Merriam Webster
* (used of hair or skin) pale or light-colored. Vocabulary.com
* (of hair or complexion) light; blonde. oxforddictionaries.com
* (of skin) pale, or (of hair) pale yellow or gold. dictionary.cambridge.org
WHITE or FAIR skin color as an indicator of God’s righteous people is found in 16 verses in the Book of Mormon. 5 out of the 16 use both words together. It is also clear that the people of 4th Nephi became “fair” (white) before they were able to get along with each other and became, “heirs to the kingdom of God”.
1 Nephi 11
13 And it came to pass that I looked and beheld the great city of Jerusalem, and also other cities. And I beheld the city of Nazareth; and in the city of Nazareth I beheld a virgin, and she was exceedingly FAIR and WHITE.
15 And I beheld the Spirit of the Lord, that it was upon the Gentiles, and they did prosper and obtain the land for their inheritance; and I beheld that they were WHITE, and exceedingly FAIR and beautiful, like unto my people before they were slain.
2 Nephi 5
21 And he had caused the cursing to come upon them, yea, even a sore cursing, because of their iniquity. For behold, they had hardened their hearts against him, that they had become like unto a flint; wherefore, as they were WHITE, and exceedingly FAIR and delightsome, that they might not be enticing unto my people the Lord God did cause a skin of blackness to come upon them.
23 And cursed shall be the seed of him that mixeth with their seed; for they shall be cursed even with the same cursing. And the Lord spake it, and it was done.
Jacob 2
32 And I will not suffer, saith the Lord of Hosts, that the cries of the FAIR daughters of this people, which I have led out of the land of Jerusalem, shall come up unto me against the men of my people, saith the Lord of Hosts.
Jacob 3
8 O my brethren, I fear that unless ye shall repent of your sins that their skins will be WHITER than yours, when ye shall be brought with them before the throne of God.
Mosiah 19
13 And it came to pass that those who tarried with their wives and their children caused that their FAIR daughters should stand forth and plead with the Lamanites that they would not slay them.
3 Nephi 2
15 And their curse was taken from them, and their skin became WHITE like unto the Nephites;
16 And their young men and their daughters became exceedingly FAIR, and they were numbered among the Nephites, and were called Nephites. And thus ended the thirteenth year.
3 Nephi 8
25 And in another place they were heard to cry and mourn, saying: O that we had repented before this great and terrible day, and had not killed and stoned the prophets, and cast them out; then would our mothers and our FAIR daughters, and our children have been spared, and not have been buried up in that great city Moronihah. And thus were the howlings of the people great and terrible.
3 Nephi 9
2 Wo, wo, wo unto this people; wo unto the inhabitants of the whole earth except they shall repent; for the devil laugheth, and his angels rejoice, because of the slain of the FAIR sons and daughters of my people; and it is because of their iniquity and abominations that they are fallen!
4 Nephi 1
10 And now, behold, it came to pass that the people of Nephi did wax strong, and did multiply exceedingly fast, and became an exceedingly FAIR and delightsome people.
17 There were no robbers, nor murderers, neither were there Lamanites, nor any manner of -ites; but they were in one, the children of Christ, and heirs to the kingdom of God.
Mormon 6
17 O ye FAIR ones, how could ye have departed from the ways of the Lord! O ye FAIR ones, how could ye have rejected that Jesus, who stood with open arms to receive you!
19 O ye FAIR sons and daughters, ye fathers and mothers, ye husbands and wives, ye FAIR ones, how is it that ye could have fallen!
Mormon 9
6 O then ye unbelieving, turn ye unto the Lord; cry mightily unto the Father in the name of Jesus, that perhaps ye may be found spotless, pure, FAIR, and WHITE, having been cleansed by the blood of the Lamb, at that great and last day.
…
Ether 7:4
4 And when Corihor was thirty and two years old he rebelled against his father, and went over and dwelt in the land of Nehor; and he begat sons and daughters, and they became exceedingly FAIR; wherefore Corihor drew away many people after him.
Ether 8
9 Now the daughter of Jared was exceedingly FAIR. And it came to pass that she did talk with her father, and said unto him: Whereby hath my father so much sorrow? Hath he not read the record which our fathers brought across the great deep? Behold, is there not an account concerning them of old, that they by their secret plans did obtain kingdoms and great glory?
10 And now, therefore, let my father send for Akish, the son of Kimnor; and behold, I am fair, and I will dance before him, and I will please him, that he will desire me to wife; wherefore if he shall desire of thee that ye shall give unto him me to wife, then shall ye say: I will give her if ye will bring unto me the head of my father, the king.
Ether 13:17
17 But he repented not, neither his FAIR sons nor daughters; neither the FAIR sons and daughters of Cohor; neither the FAIR sons and daughters of Corihor; and in fine, there were none of the FAIR sons and daughters upon the face of the whole earth who repented of their sins.
The phrase, “Choice land above all other lands” (or very similar to it) is found in 14 verses in the Book Mormon.
1 Nephi 2:20
1 Nephi 13:30
2 Nephi 1:5
2 Nephi 10:19
Jacob 5:43
Ether 1:38
Ether 1:42
Ether 2:7
Ether 2:10
Ether 2:12
Ether 2:15
Ether 9:20
Ether 10:28
Ether 13:2
This is the vision Nephi received from an angel telling him who would obtain America as a land of inheritance from the Native Americans (his “brethren”).
1 Nephi 13
12 And I looked and beheld a man among the Gentiles, who was separated from the seed of my brethren by the many waters; and I beheld the Spirit of God, that it came down and wrought upon the man; and he went forth upon the many waters, even unto the seed of my brethren, who were in the promised land.
13 And it came to pass that I beheld the Spirit of God, that it wrought upon other Gentiles; and they went forth out of captivity, upon the many waters.
14 And it came to pass that I beheld many multitudes of the Gentiles upon the land of promise; and I beheld the wrath of God, that it was upon the seed of my brethren; and they were scattered before the Gentiles and were smitten.
15 And I beheld the Spirit of the Lord, that it was upon the Gentiles, and they did prosper and obtain the land for their inheritance; and I beheld that they were white, and exceedingly fair and beautiful, like unto my people before they were slain.
30 Nevertheless, thou beholdest that the Gentiles who have gone forth out of captivity, and have been lifted up by the power of God above all other nations, upon the face of the land which is choice above all other lands, which is the land that the Lord God hath covenanted with thy father that his seed should have for the land of their inheritance; wherefore, thou seest that the Lord God will not suffer that the Gentiles will utterly destroy the mixture of thy seed, which are among thy brethren.
God gave America to these white gentiles as their inheritance. The Spirit of God inspired Christopher Columbus and other Europeans to come here. It was God’s will that the native people here be scattered and smitten. The idea that this is not a land of inheritance for these white Euorpean gentiles is complete and total false doctrine. The idea that these gentiles were somehow wicked and guilty to scatter the Native Americans is also complete false doctrine. The idea that America is not “choice above all other lands” and loving America and believing it to be the greatest place on earth (nationalism) is a sin, is also false doctrine. The idea that America is to be shared with every race and culture on earth is false doctrine.

What disgusting creatures these lot are. God told people to be fruitful and multiply, while the scourge and the false prophets and decievers shalt have no claim in heaven. For behold When these white ‘nazis’ get into trouble you know what these lot bring. Drugs, crimes, school shootings infighting and corrupt and decay to the land. They are SATAN’S SPAWN!! guided only by inquity and not of the lord but OF THE DEVIL and they shall have their souls find no reward, but to be met by Christ and the lord Jesus christ himself who when asked what they did to Christ’s sheep, he shall turn and say “I know thee not, for thine heart is darkened with inquities and the evils of men and not the light of christ”, and the very gates of hell shall open and DEVOUR them in everlasting suffering.

I knew a Mormon couple that was called to serve in a group that comments on anything that portrays the church in a negative way. Many of the comments on this article are likely from this group. They are basically PR specialists working for the church for free. As can be seen from Jimmy Smith’s comment and Dave Calder response, the full truth is rarely spoken by the church and their PR specialists. The couple that I knew eventually left the church as they learned more about the non whitewashed version of Mormon church history.

I went to that youtube channel, and I believe that is a different “Deseret Nation” totally unaffiliated with the #Deznat Deseret Nation. The tone, emphasis, graphic design, timeline (channel established 2011) and aesthetics are totally different. Is there anything linking them aside from the shared name? I don’t think trying to pin that guy’s youtube channel to #Deznat is helping your argument at all.

The phrase “white and a delightsome people” does indeed appear in earlier editions of the Book of Mormon, including the first edition printed in 1830.
LDS doctrine prevented blacks from holding the priesthood or obtaining temple endowments. On August 17, 1949, the LDS 1st presidency issue this statement:
“The position of the Church regarding the Negro may be understood when another doctrine of the Church is kept in mind, namely, that the conduct of spirits in the premortal existence has some determining effect upon the conditions and circumstances under which these spirits take on mortality and that while the details of this principle have not been made known, the mortality is a privilege that is given to those who maintain their first estate; and that the worth of the privilege is so great that spirits are willing to come to earth and take on bodies no matter what the handicap may be as to the kind of bodies they are to secure; and that among the handicaps, failure of the right to enjoy in mortality the blessings of the priesthood is a handicap which spirits are willing to assume in order that they might come to earth. Under this principle there is no injustice whatsoever involved in this deprivation as to the holding of the priesthood by the Negroes.”

If they start excommunicating White people for being White they won’t need to excommunicate me. I’ll just leave. What they would win from such a coarse of action is some lukewarm applause from the Left, a few weeks of articles praising their decision, and a LOT of their members joining churches that do not have command structures from which they can be rejected. It would be a very good way to create a new wave of Anti Mormon sentiment among their main target audience – White Christians. Furthermore, if leaving the LDS was as easy as uttering a slur, than every fifteen year old boy who wanted to break the law of chastity or word of wisdom would simply become a racist. These are people the church is trying to retain, not push out. The sad thing you Leftists forget is that by asking Americans to attack “bigotry” you are really asking them to attack their families. In short, if the LDS abandons it’s members it has abandoned it’s authority.

Unfortunately, you misquote Latter-day Saint scripture, and seem to misunderstand Church doctrine. Nowhere in our scripture does the phrase “white and a delightsome people” appear. 2 Nephi 30:6 talks about “a pure and a delightsome people” which is clearly a reference to spiritual cleanliness and purity and not skin color. And contrary to your opinion, the church’s doctrine does not promote “racial superiority”, quite the contrary, in fact, it teaches that “all are alike unto God” (2 Ne 26:33). The Book of Mormon scriptures about whiteness or skins of blackness are metaphorical analogies to spiritual light and darkness. See my article for more detail https://jimmysmith.org/mormonism/is-the-lamanite-dark-skin-literal-or-figurative/
