The leaves are turning, the weather is cooling down and pumpkin spice is hitting the shelves. Fall is here, which means it’s time for apples, sweaters and of course — game nights with your friends. Here’s how to have the perfect fall game night of your own.

Snacks

Your first priority for any game night should, of course, be snacks. A great snack bar should have both sweet and savory snacks. For extra points with your guests, make the snacks customizable so that everyone can have the experience they want.

One great option to have is a caramel apple bar. Cut up some apple slices, melt down some chocolate and caramel along with toppings like marshmallows or chocolate chips. Then you’ve got a great build-your-own festive snack for your friends to enjoy.

A charcuterie board is also a great way to get creative with the snacks you serve. While cheese, crackers and cured meats are always a safe combo to serve, experimenting with your board will give you and your guests something to fawn over. Charcuterie boards can be as elaborate or simple as you want them to be. No matter what, they’ll always be a fun way to make your game night stand out.

Be sure not to forget beverages. Providing apple cider or hot chocolate is a must.

Games

If you want to lean into the Halloween season with a mysterious, spooky game, check out Unsolved Case Files. This game, which has gained attention on TikTok, lets you and your friends become cold-case detectives.  To play, you’ll first need to read the case file the game provides you with. Then, you’ll get to parse through all the evidence to find clues. You’ll use these clues to solve three objectives given by the game. Online answer keys let you check your work as you go. Finally, after you solve the third objective, you’ll have closed the case. For even more fun, dress in costume!

If you’re looking for something a little less elaborate, a deck of cards can entertain for hours. This website has instructions for over 40 different card games. Spoons is always a great game for almost any size group and can be played with several variations. However, to add the most drama to the game, try hiding the spoons around the house and watch as a race to find them ensues. Jackbox Games also offers a range of games that groups can play from a TV. Some of their games include one where participants have to write raps, tell believable lies, or play a version of Pictionary.

Other Considerations

If you want to elevate your game night from good to great, there are a few extra things to consider.

First, smells. Lighting a simple fall-scented candle is a great way to cozy up the mood and invite your guests into your space. Or if you want to get a little extra fancy, put together a simmer pot. Second, sounds. Background music is a sure way to make any space feel a little more alive. Folk music or soft jazz is perfect for leaning into the mellow feel fall can bring. But really any music is good music to play for a night of laughing with friends. Finally, visuals. Soft, warm lighting is welcoming and cozy. Throw up some fairy lights or pumpkin-shaped lanterns to add a little glow to the room. For extra effect, consider playing something like this ten-hour YouTube video of a crackling fire on the TV.

Follow these steps and everyone you know will be falling for your amazing, perfectly planned game night.
