SaThe No. 23 Utah Volleyball team went 1-1 this past weekend against Arizona and Arizona State at the Jon. M. Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The Utes are 17-5 on the season and currently fifth in the Big 12 with a 7-4 record. Utah travels on the road to face Colorado on Wednesday before a rematch with BYU this upcoming Friday at the Huntsman Center.
Arizona
The Utah volleyball team defeated Arizona 3-1 (25-20, 21-25, 25-20, 26-24) Thursday night at the Jon. M. Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.
During the first set, the Utes would take an early 7-5 lead on a kill by Kamry Bailey. Utah would open up a six-point lead on an ace by Lauren Jardine to make it 18-12. Arizona made a three-point run before Kamryn Gibadlo tallied her 500th career kill for the Utes to make it 20-16. Utah would battle back and forth until Jardine secured the final kill to give the Utes the first set win 25-20.
During the second set, the Wildcats came out strong and aggressive. Arizona opened up the second with a 5-1 lead, as well as winning the race to 15 with a 15-12. The Utes would cut the Wildcats lead to two at 20-22 on a kill by Gibadlo, but Arizona took the second set 21-25.
The third set saw the Utes hold the Wildcats to an impressively low .000 hitting percentage (11-11-35), while Utah hit .200 (11-5-30). The Utes won the race to 15 on an ace by Claranne Fechter to make it 15-10. After Arizona tied the set 18-18, Utah would go on a five-point run with points from Rianne Vos, Amelia Van Der Werff, and Emrie Satuala to make it 23-18. Utah took the third set on a kill by Gibadlo to make it 25-20.
The fourth set saw 10 ties and five lead changes throughout the final set between the two teams. Arizona would open up an early 5-1 lead, but Utah would win the race to 15 on a block assist by Allie Olsen and Gibadlo to make it 15-13.
Arizona and Utah would battle to the first set point, with the advantage going to the Wildcats at 21-24. The Utes would then go on a five-point run with kills from Gibadlo and Satuala to take the set 26-24 and take the match with a 3-1 series win.
Leading the Utes with 19 kills and a .349 hitting percentage (19-3-46) was Kamryn Gibadlo. Olsen and Jardine each had nine kills a piece. Satuala was a force on both ends with six kills and eight blocks. Both Grace Hammond (26) and Isabelle Marco (20) had 20 assists in the win.
No. 11 Arizona State
The No. 23 Utah Volleyball lost to No. 11 Arizona State in straight sets 0-3 (19-25, 19-25, 18-25) Saturday afternoon at the Jon. M. Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The first set saw Utah open with a 9-4 lead on a kill by Kamry Bailey. There was a turning point in the first with Utes up three, leading 13-10. A back-and-forth rally with Kamryn Gibadlo eventually led to a kill that put the Utes up 14-10.
After an Arizona challenge, it was determined that there was an Utah net violation, which resulted in a Wildcats point to make it 13-11. Arizona would go on a six-point run, winning the race to 15 with a 13-15 lead. The Utes would be unable to get within three the rest of the first losing 19-25.
The Utes played from behind to start the second set 1-5. Bailey would get kills to tie the set at 8-8 and 9-9. Utah pulled to within one at 19-20 on a kill by Gibadlo. Arizona then would go on a five-point run to take the second set 19-25.
The Wildcats opened the third set with a 5-1 lead over Utah. Allie Olsen would go on a three-point run with two kills and one block to cut the lead to 4-5. Arizona would then open up a six-point lead to go up 10-4. Utah continued to battle uphill and ultimately never got closer to five before losing the third and final set 18-25.
Leading the Utes with nine kills were both Emrie Satuala and Olsen. Satuala led Utah with a .341 hitting percentage (9-1-19). Isabelle Marco (15) and Grace Hammond (14) led the team in assists.
