Kind of big and kind of scary

Looking up at the buildings surrounding you, I know what you are thinking: It's so big and scary. But the truth is...well...now, come to think of it, the U is kind of big and scary. And it is so hard to find your way around. And once you park your car, it'll take a couple of hours to just find the right lot.

Hinckley Institute of Politics

The Hinckley Institute of Politics will soon have new programs to offer to U students. Last fall, a committee was organized to decide what new goals the institute should pursue. "We'd like to create international internships, more non-governmental internships and create a program in applied politics," said Ron Hrebenar, chairman of the political science department and the interim director of the institute.

U observatory home to physics star party

On Aug. 27, Mars will be closer to the earth than it has been in 59,000 years. U students and the general public can view the planet during one of the U's star parties-hosted by the physics department and the U Astronomical Society-held every Wednesday night.

Shortage causes state strain

Becoming a nurse at the U isn't easy. Last year, only 100 of the 266 applicants were admitted into the U College of Nursing reported Maureen Keefe, the school's dean. The college is short 30 faculty members. It doesn't have the funding to hire sufficient faculty.

Trio of Ute seniors set sights on Nationals

The U men's golf team has a core of returning seniors this year that could set the stage for one of the best golf seasons ever by a Utah squad. After coming out of nowhere to win two regular-season tournaments last year, the U golfers and coaches know how important the upcoming year will be.

Two women accounted for almost half of the total points scored by the Utah women's basketball team last year and were largely responsible for the team's record-setting regular season record of 22-5. The same two women grabbed more than a third of the team's total rebounds and led the team to a surprising regular-season conference championship.

Training center marks U rebuilding effort

With a little bit of help, the U track program has overcome serious working constraints to accomplish impressive results over the last couple of seasons. The U does not have track facilities for the athletes, which has forced them to use training locations that are not on campus.

Utes hope chemistry woes are over

Chemistry between players and coaches is pivotal for any team to be successful. Last year's U softball team proved that point, as a breakdown in chemistry caused the team to lose focus and have an unsuccessful season. "The team had some real chemistry issues, and you can't have those and do well," coach Mona Stevens said.

Loaded Utes will once again rely on youth

With the departure of Theresa Kulikowski, the U gymnastics team is now looking for new leaders heading into the 2004 season, with Annabeth Eberle and Melissa Vituj as prime candidates to take on the role. The two star gymnasts led the team throughout the 2003 season and must continue to do the same if the Utes wish to compete for the NCAA Championship in 2004.
